I got up scans from three new Mattel catalogs today ( www.robotjapan.com/Gallery/Misc/Literature/Japanese%20Toy%20Advertisements.asp ). Special thanks to Steve of pleasesavemerobots.blogspot.com/ for directing the scan donor to me (BTW, Steve, check out the 1979 Italian catalog for the Grendizer Jumbo - I recall that you were wondering about advertising for this - this was one I had up for awhile). Although this has been discussed on TBDX before, I don't think its been brought up here before - if you look at the 1980 catalog, you can see several prototype ships for the 3" figures that were never produced. Crazy new designs for the American market. But also new (and something I'd never seen before) is a 3" Raideen prototype in the German catalog from 1978!! Also check out the Gaiking paint scheme - I love it!! We've already seen a Liger 3", and now there's the possibility of a Raideen one. Very interesting. Side note: I now have a lot of the Shogun Warriors catalog scans up. You can really get a good idea of the chronology of the toy line from these. But Steve already did a fantastic job on his blog based on store ads (be sure to check out all 3 parts (the other two are on the next page)): pleasesavemerobots.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2009-09-04T11%3A08%3A00-07%3A00&max-results=7Additional side note: Be sure to check out the other new ads I put up on the page, including the Gatchaman nodders, Henshin Cyborgs, and another Popy ad.

I'm pretty friggin' excited by this. To me, this is like the find of the year. And it makes perfect sense. Considering the number of the 3" figures, why wouldn't they make one to correspond with each larger toy issued under the Shogun Warriors line? As I've previously mentioned, we've already discovered actual Getter Ligers, and now there's evidence that a Raideen might have been produced (or was at least planned). The only Shogun Warriors figure that is not represented by a 3" figure is Daimos, if I'm not mistaken. That gives me hope that perhaps there's a prototype of this toy, too!! Strangely, they released the Leopardin, which was not under the Shogun Warriors line, but was released under the later-issued Godaikin line.
