Ok, I've made a few Mazinger items as .STL files... ...perhaps I'll try to up them at shapeways so you folks there can play with 'em.

AWESOME.
So if I would ask for a duplicate of your retrorobot, how much would it cost?
You can Private Message me if you want privacy. It is very very inspiring work and congratulations!

Thank you Ed for your warm support Actually RetroroBo is my first attempt into the world of chogokin (metal) manufacturing and although it might look good in the shelf it is a total disaster when you hold it in hand Do to the nature of screw and bolt joints (which first I thought it’s a good idea!) The problem is the direction of screws is the same direction of joint movement so every time that you change the pose basically you unscrew them and add the weight itself as an other issue. As I said all my works are just studies and no way near finished product for manufacturing. But thanks to forums like robot-japan I am able to see the reaction of real robot fans and basically each step forward encourages me to think of better solutions. Now to the operation room (subjective: disassembly of gx-45 and study the ratchet joint system )

Dissect, autopsy, and study every robot toy you can get yer hands on. It's good to know about all the different types of joint-assembly systems and how they work. That should help you come up with new concepts and innovations. Good luck, and keep us posted. zozo-magengar

Good luck on your journey its always a facinating one and remember we always learn from mistakes. did you think to put a rubber tip to your screws so that it might be a medium between the metal joint (not sure if there is space but it might solve your unscrewing problem?
Funny thing is i just got the gx-49 and i was now thinking of getting the gx-45 to actualy just do that studying you mentionned hehe there very well made.

Yes i guess it need something there but the problem is the screw head itself tuching the joint budy which i guess i have to widened the hole more but ill do a test with rubber for sure

love your drowing mate but the joint system is like this: 3.bp.blogspot.com/_HUAL7xBHe4U/SyEakEIn1yI/AAAAAAAAAEk/IO1OnZG8Akw/s1600-h/rero.jpgso its a screw and a bolt holding it and your idea of rubber actually might be good for between the two parts ! not a squishy one but rather flat one but again i am thinking for the next time i realy have to pay attention to not design the joint movment in the direction of the screw but opposite of it

That's a cool concept, and a nice idea for future reference whenever I need to repair a joint. It seems like quite a Puzzle to solve: "The direction of the joint movement vs. the direction of the screw (including its threads and assembly)"... ...most joints seem to pivot in many directions. So then, the screw must be rigged in a way that the joint movement won't unscrew the bolt out of place. Ok, I gotta stop lookin at this drawing... ...as an optical illusion, it looks like something else. ;D zozo-magengar Yes i guess it need something there but the problem is the screw head itself tuching the joint budy which i guess i have to widened the hole more but ill do a test with rubber for sure you might not need to widen the hole just put a rubber at the tip hoping you have enough space to screw in the enough so it holds. a bit like this.

I like your designs... but that Retro-bot is my favorite. It looks a good size, too; and I dig the leather backpack you made for it. The Rosekeeper model would look great on a desk in a doctor's or an attorney's office... the sculpt has that kind of artistic vibe to it. I swear I thought I heard the background music theme to "2001 Space Odyssey" in my mind while you were turning the Retro-bot around. ;D Awesome! zozo-Magengar

Hey, first up, I've seen you over at Shapeways and have to commend you, your work is always absolutely superb. We recently shut down our toy company but towards the end we learned to avoid Shapeways because our protos kept coming out wrong...delicate parts kept breaking off or just not showing up on the model at all. We once did a model for a client and when we had it printed at Shapeways for US$200 it came out with absolutely no detail and, of course, we couldn't charge the client for it. We also only specialise in robots and will probably stage a comeback later in the year under another name. It would be good to talk to you about design ideas since our first release vinyl toy is based on the original machinder toys of the late 70s, maybe see what you think.
