As far as I understand, rumored to be safe means the toys are relatively new and there has been little to no report of breakage. However, as with most others Yamato toys, only time will tell. So it means it should be good until time proven otherwise!
Potentially bad shoulders means there is a possibility that the shoulder will "explode" on its own behave. This could be due to the orientation of which the knurled pin was inserted into the hinge. Therefore take your chances when you buy these.
Having said that, my VF-1A Hikaru with super & strike parts still have good shoulders (knock on wood). However I believe the VF-1A I have got is NOT from the first release but a much later one, hence the shoulders "may" be better than the first release, but we never know for sure.

I can't be sure but b/c the GBP Vf-1J had issues (it was released after the VF-1j Super) I would guess that this vf-1j could also have shoulder issues
Last I read the GBP version (on atleast on the initial release) had gotten the older pin and not the smooth pins that would "fix" the problem . The GBP was supposed to have used the new pins but ... they didn't .
Unless you'r guaranteed that this is the most recent release using the new smooth pins , it will probably have the same shoulder issues.

i'm on the fence as well on getting a v2. why can't yamato get over their aversion to using die cast on critical parts.
