Glad you asked! For Raideen's (and all others)
white armor areas, I start the shading with faint
ballpoint pen lines: I hold the pen lightly and
draw the lines real gently (not pressing down
on the paper) until a line appears...
...then, I'll draw a couple more faint pen lines,
each one close together...
...then, I'll use a pencil with a dull point, and
gently start the shading- moving the pencilpoint
in small circular motions, and then I lightly
smudge the penciled areas with my fingertip
to smooth away the lines (as an option).
I thought of using a Light-Grey watercolor marker,
but watercolor markers tend to bleed too much,
and they'd smear my basic pen lines which I
started the robot's outline with.
With the above technique, I try my best to
imitate the "anime cellshading" that's been used
for the classic super-robots, as seen on tv
back in their day.
In this way, also, I shade between lighter hues
and darker hues- using colored pencils- similar to
what you'd do in Photoshop or MSPaint or other
image-editing programs.
I do the same thing for drawing human anime
characters like Koji (which you'll soon see
later this week).
Now, as for the pencil-smudging, when I wanna
make a sudden shade change: I'd use a pencil
eraser to sculpt the shading so its edges are
sharp-- that will allow me to begin the next
shade right at the very edge of the previous
shade, either a lighter or darker shade,
depending on what the previous shade color was.
The result would be a "two-toned" or "cellshaded"
area inside the character.
This works perfect for robot armor, as well as
human flesh tones.
Update 15 FEB '10:Grendy's done, so is Great Mazinger,
AND a "manga" styled rendition showing
Koji in the foreground/Mazinger-Z's head
behind him in the background.
Next up: Dai Apolon. ;D
Update 16 FEB '10:I've started pencil-lining Dai Apolon.
And I'm half-way done with the 1967
version of Giant Robot (the classic
Johnny Sokko live-action version).
YYYYYESSS! ;D

Awesome pose on Raideen!
What are you using to shade the white areas?
Pencil? Marker?
