OK Gang,
Need some help please. I BELIEVE that I've had a catalog mix-up. Need some help ID'ing where these catalogs should go:
These were all stored away in my Danguard. Where the heck should they go, or at least can anyone ID what products the Popy catalogs normally go with?
Thx

First one I have seen with Grendizer toys - GA-37 spazer, as well as the PA-6x ones. The Grendizer toys also get blue catalogs - I have seen both, and each in deadstock (sealed) condition.
Second one I've seen with GA-52's, but I think only once, so it may have been a throw in. I've seen it once or twice with PA-87, but still not definitive.
The other green one (second last) goes with (at least) the GA-4x Robocons and Kyodain's. I'm sure it goes with a bunch of Popinica vehicles also.
The others I'm not sure.

They look like chogokin catalogs, though I'm not sure which line- perhaps the small diecast line.
The racecar Machine Hayabusa was the first to catch my eye... ...I remember seeing it displayed on the same shelf with chogokins in a toystore up in the Bronx (Hobby Tree) back in the late '70s. But I was too young/dumb to know what this toyline was about. I assume there had been, or is, a chogokin diecast version of the Machine Hayabusa out somewhere, perhaps either rare or obscure (NOT the Hotwheels knockoff). I also see those other racecar catalogs, perhaps from the same category as Machine Hayabusa's. I guess the racecars then may all be popi's.
The first catalog looks like it features some sentai and super-robot vehicles... I could almost see what looks like a Pilder in that page. I see a UFO ship, don't know which series it belongs to. The catalog on the far right looks like it features either popi or chogokin robots. But, also on the cover, I see two robots with their legs spread apart in a stance like jumbos (chogokin robots' legs are vertically Straight)
Over all, I honestly can't say exactly where each of these catalogs should go (to their original boxes) where the toy came from. I even have trouble discerning the difference between Chogokins and Popinicas.

Those were jumbos on that one catalog. Can anyone confirm that the Jumbo look catalog was ONLY for Jumbos?

The one on the far right featuring the jumbos I have in both of my Combattler and Gaiking "MekaRobo" boxes. The Hayabusa and race car ones are clear, and the green ones were used in SO MANY chogokin and popynica of the day. Over 50 at least. If you have it, pull out your Yuji Nishimura treasure appraisal guide of Popy Chogokin and the answers are all there. If I wasn't on vacation right now I would bust it out and scan some pages but I'm sure you (Edwardo) have it.

You know, this is just "one of those things".. People call things (I'm looking at you HK ebay sellers) as "variants", as if paint differences were intentional. We've actually TALKED to executives that worked at Popy at the time and they confirmed if they had an excess of one paint on any given day then the toys produced that day likely got those colors. FACT.
That being the case, I think it's safe to say that the same can be assumed about the catalogs. They could be throwing them in if there was excess etc etc. I don't think there was/is ANY definitive way for us to catalog or be sure of these things. We just need to quantify by examples... This explanation may be to "academic" for some. And, yes, I meant that as a joke.

That's pretty interesting, though I guess its what you would expect in most cases. Makes perfect sense. But it won't stop people from paying through the roof for "variants". It still makes those alt paint schemes more rare and "desirable". Inconsistent catalog use is also a pretty interesting concept. I don't buy enough boxed vintage toys to ever be able to note differences in catalogs (or provide help in IDing what goes where).

me likes school, lol. Thx Erik. Yes, I've noted a few odd catalog pairings. Who cares about quality control when we are talking advertising, over prints, and humnas
