I won an auction for two Bismarck vehicles, and expected them to be the typical diecast Popinica toys. However, when they arrived, they turned out to be larger, plastic, battery operated toys.
At first, I couldn't find anything online about them. So I figured it might be worthwhile to do a little write-up of them since they are not too common. But I finally found a site with detailed pics once I learned that the show had alternate names. Known in Japan as Seijuushi Bismarck, this show was marketed in much of the world under different titles. In the US, it was known as Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs ( www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2401 ).
In addition to the main robot from the show, three vehicles from the show were made into toys - the Arrow Striker (a spaceship), the Road Leon (a car), and Donatello (a mechanical horse). I never saw the show, so I can't offer much else. Popy made these toys in the standard scale under designations PC-48 through PC-50. However, it seems that larger scale toys (be it deluxe or large scale or whatever else you want to call them) were also made of all three. As previously mentioned, these are plastic toys with battery powered light up and sound features. Although they don't have Popy markings, they do have Bandai markings:
I've always loved the design of the Road Leon (a sleek futuristic car similar to Daimos' Tryper). Here's both toys:
The toys open up and allow a poseable figure to be the driver. Unfortunately, I only have the driver for the Road Leon.
Both vehicles include popup features that include colorful light-up guns:
Finally, here's a size comparison with a typical popinica toy:
Unfortunately, I don't have the boxes, and I don't own the standard sized toys. However, more info and pics can be found at these links:
