this was my favorite toy from the 80s. it was in the same vein as voltron - you put smaller robots together to make one big robot. i think it even fired a missile?? i found it on this site several years ago but i forgot what it was called. thanks!

sorry, i no longer have it. i spent HOURS searching people's collections last night and i couldn't find a photo of it. i remember the figures being very solidly made, maybe combination of diecast and plastic. two of the little robots had small shields on their shoulders. since i was a little kid back then, i can't accurately recall the size of the individual robots, or the large robot. the individual robots were different colors. i want to say i got it from a relative who went overseas (japan?) around the mid 80s.

2 of the robots has small (red?) shields attached to one of their shoulders. there were at least 4 small robots because each leg and arm where different ones. i'm betting there were more than 4.

Sounds like Dancouga or the older Dancougar to me? The price five years ago seems about right.

not the might orbots. i am not sure if this toy was also featured in a tv show, or not. the robots all looked the same, just different colors hard to explain, but they looked more 'chiseled' in their features.

Haha, I'm scrolling down this thread for the 1st time, and about to babble about the 7-2-1 set, when ta-da! Myles nailed it. The tipoff for me was when you said "chiseled looks" that's immediately Takara's stuff, haha.
A very nice set, including the box. Not too complicated combination, but looks nice overall. You can get them for decent prices if you're patient, as near MIB ones show up often.

I thought they go for about $150 and up, but I don't really look for these so I could be off.

Some sellers hopefully ask for more, but sales for boxed ones usually go for $160-$400 depending on mintyness. machinesoldier and TomV are pretty good with the know-how on this series. Also to keep in mind, these Takara boxes usually have no bottom cardboard box. Just the window lid, and outer lid over the squeakyfoam tray.
