Cybertron Megatron
Overview: Over the years, Megatron / Galvatron has taken on many forms. He’s been a gun, a laser cannon, several tanks and jets, a dinosaur and three dragons, but he’s never been an over-sized, silly looking race car until now. To be fair, Megatron is quite impressive looking in robot mode (though he lacks the distinctive Megatron look), but much like his RID counterpart, Megatron’s versatility in becoming more than one vehicle is more of a joke than a selling point.
Robot Mode: Megatron is very well proportioned and articulated, and has a very distinctive face. His colors are unusual, but far more appealing than one might expect combinations of purple, orange, teal and black to be. It’s both refreshing and disappointing that this robot in no way resembles the previous incarnations of Megatron. It’s an entirely new character with an entirely old name. I should also mention that Megatron’s weapon, a gun with a spinning wheel at the end of it, is laughable at best. Considering that part of the Megatron legend involves toting absurdly large, impressive guns/weapons (G1 Galvatron, G2 Megatron, BW Megatron, BW Transmetal 2 Megatron, Armada Megatron, Energon Megatron), as well as the fact that ol’ Megsy began his career as a weapon, his latest incarnation definitely deserves better.
Vehicle modes: All of Megatron’s previous incarnations have suggested great power. Guns, tanks and dragons make for fearful opponents, and easily explain how Megatron came to be the leader of his evil horde of Decepticons. Megatron as a race-car completely loses sight of this, though. The race-car isn’t even well-done. The nose of the car is flimsy, and has awkward gaps between it and the cockpit. This vehicle looks more like a poorly assembled erector set than a solid car. The jet mode is even worse. It looks like exactly what it is: a race-car with its front wheels folded back as wings. I’d be embarrassed to claim this as one of my alternate modes, let alone an authentic transformation.
Transformation: Confusing. I had to read the instructions several times before I’d realized I’d already correctly transformed the vehicle and that it wasn’t going to look any better.
To Conclude: A very nice looking robot mode with two absolutely worthless vehicle modes. If you want a nice robot to display, Megs is very nice eye-candy. If you’re looking for a fun transforming robot, look somewhere else.
