Cybertron Optimus Prime


Overview: Optimus Prime is back and looking bad-ass. Prime is bulky in all the right places and articulate in all the rest. His mouth is a disturbing sight, but can be covered with the familiar Prime mouth-plate at the pull of a lever. In vehicle mode, Prime passes up the conventional tractor-trailer mode for a heavily armed truck, somewhat reminiscent of his RID fire truck mode.

Robot mode: Prime is absolutely breathtaking in combined mode, even if his mounted shoulder weapons are a bit large and awkward looking. Unfortunately, his uncombined robot mode is a bit stumpy and silly. Prime is too short, and his scrawny upper-arms give the impression that Prime is wearing a t-shirt and shoulder pads.

Vehicle modes: Truck mode is adequate, though not particularly impressive. However, his winged truck mode is just as silly and random as it sounds.

Transformation: Prime is quite fun to transform, and his parts have enough versatility to allow for many alternate mode possibilities.

In Conclusion: Prime’s uncombined robot mode could be better, and his truck mode is decidedly average, but both the robot mode and transformation make this piece well worth owning.

Is there any diecast content on this toy? Not even a little?

There's a hybrid Diecast version out there, selling on ebay for around $70, but the regular version is all plastic. Still, the plastic is heavy and high enough quality that you almost mistake it for diecast. I don't think the hybrid version is necessary.

haven't seen it yet in walmart in canada maybe its in toys r us already.?

This version of Optimus has no appeal to me personally at all. I guess it's mainly due to a rather strange looking semi and as Shaxper has pointed out, the whole spaceship/ semi truck thing is pretty awful. He does look good in robot form, but not enough to make up for lacking everywhere else. Actually I like the new Megatron more than this Optimus. My grade for Optimus would be a C, and only because of his combiner mode with Sonic Bomber for technical achievement.

That's the real crux of it. I think Prime's robot mode is amazing, but if it isn't enough for you, then the rest of the modes aren't going to make up for it.

Incidentally, I didn't LOVE Prime until I came up with this alternate mode. Maybe it will change your opinion:

As for Megatron, I really like his robot mode, but I think his vehicle modes are absolutely hideous, whereas Prime's truck mode was simply average. Either way, the strength of both figures certainly appears to be their robot modes.
