Hi guys,
Here's a review of Galaxy Force Chromia done by Rohml of the Cybertron Philippines Proboards. Enjoy! ;D
Galaxy Force: Chromia
by Rohml
Chromia is a female decepticon under the command of Starscream. Only in the Japanese series Galaxy Force is this character known as "Chromia", the US counterpart of Galaxy Force (Cybertron) names her "Thunderblast". Personally, I like Chromia better since it refers to G1's female transformers.
Review
I will review Chromia in three categories:
- Sculpt (Form and Color)
- Articulation (Movable Parts and how can it be moved)
- Fun Factor (How did I enjoy it)
But before we start with the sculpt lets look at Chromia's accessories.
Chromia comes with two Orange translucent missile, one rocket launcher and a Earth Force Chip. The use of the Earth Force Chip will be discussed later.
Sculpt
Boat Mode:
Chromia's alternate mode is a boat. Actually a speed boat with a huge rocket launcher. Chromia, when in boat mode is around 5 inches long and 4 inches wide.
The boat's main is blue with a silver linings and some translucent orange.
The boat looks like a boat, no "its a boat cuz we said so" thing here. It even comes complete with some seats for the passengers and a movable machine gun. It reminds me of Vietnam-war gun boats, that were used for river assaults. Very nice sculpt on the vehicle mode.
Chromia's rocket launcher fits on the slot on the back of the boat to complete the "river assault boat mode". The slot made of rubbery material, that in design could be moved 360 degrees, but since the joint that moves this part is quite stiff I wasn't able to move it.
Robot mode:
Before we get to the Robot mode, let me give you some info on how Chromia transforms, Chromia's robot mode is actually a shell and inside that shell is Chromia's full robot form. Though her feet is the boats front nose, most of her body is hidden within the boat's hull.
Its actually funny and weird to look at Chromia's position when she's in boat mode.
Chromia, while in robot mode, stands at around 4.8 inches, 5 inches at the tip of the shell.
Chromia's color doesn't change much when in robot form, its still blue with specks of gold and silver. The upper body and head of Chromia is silver with some minimal detailing. Her chest has a small gem-like material that doesn't really do anything but just adds detail to Chromia. Her arms are opened hands that are dainty and feminine looking, establishing a really female look. To finish off the female look her legs are slim, dainty and ends off with a foot with heels.
The shell (which is generally the whole boat) is connected to Chromia's back giving her some "wings", If look closely at Chromia's picture above the tip of the shell shines as though she had a halo. (Angelic-themes)
The rocket launcher from the back of the boat becomes Chromia's main weapon. An angel with a Rocket Launcher! Heck yea!
How the rocket launcher connects to Chromia is quite clever, Chromia has opened hands which couldn't be able to grip the gun, so what Takara did was they punched a hole in Chromia's arm that will connect to the peg that's on the gun (that peg is also used to connect the gun to the boat.)
As a bonus, Chromia has light-piping on the back of her head, making her eyes glow when light is shined from behind her head.
Articulation
She has 18 points of articulation, most of them focused on her transformation. She has double jointed elbows, ball jointed hips and shoulders, weird cut joints on the thigh and some peg joints on the knees. Her neck has a cut joint but because of the mold of the head and shoulders her head couldn't be moved much.
Balance wise, Chromia sucks. Her shell prevents her from balancing well since her feet are quite small and her Shell is too unwieldy. It also affects articulation since the shell prevents her from doing some poses. She is limited to just standing straight with bent legs. Sad very sad.
Tons of articulation, all went to the drain because of the shell... But wait, all is not lost. There is a solution to this problem... REMOVE THE SHELL.
Upon removing the Shell (read further to see how I removed the shell), you are left with a slim and poseable Chromia.
Her full articulation potential is now realized!
She can now do a whole lot of poses:
Ballet bot.
Chromia kick!
Rohml's Kick Test
By this time you already know what the kick-test does, if not, then the kick test gages a toys ability to do a pose plus the toy's ability to hold that pose plus that toy's ability to keep it self balance without the external help.
Chromia... passes!
She also has a very high kick, almost 7 inches! She could kick a ML toy in the face.
Fun Factor
The gimmick of this toys is the Force Chip. Using the force chip, you can unleash the hidden power of Chromia...
Her rocket launcher changes in shape... well at least now you can use the rocket launcher to actually launch Chromia's two translucent missiles.
Overall
The price I paid for it was a tad high for its size, but you have to understand she is a Japanese release so its acceptable.
Its actually a cheap shot when a TF is made as a shell-former because it doesn't need a lot of brain-work to make a TF whose alternate mode just wraps around the robot form. But in this case its different, Chromia needs to be a shell-former. This is in tune to making Chromia's robot form to be as daintily and as feminine as possible.
Good sculpt, Great Articulation (without the shell), So-so gimmicks. I give it a A-
