First off, welcome to the Robot-Japan forums. I recently joined myself, and have found this is one of the last polite and more mature forums out there, which is a rare thing these days. All the people I have communicated with on these forums are very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. A restoration project is one of the joys of collecting vintage gokin. These are what really define a "labor of love." The best way I can help is offer a few bullet-point suggestions: - To clean plastic, use Novus plastic cleaners. These come in 3 different applications. One for heavy scratches (#3), one for mild surface scratches (#2) and a polisher (#1). These polishes are safe for all plastics and protect your plastics from dust. I have restored and cleaned the plastic of over 90+ G1 Transformers. You can purchase Novus on Amazon. www.amazon.com/Novus-Polish-Plastic-Scratch-Remover/dp/B0000WUC7E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309835523&sr=8-1
- Repro parts might be hard to come by but your best bet for getting parts is searching eBay from time to time and search for robot parts in lots. You might get a bunch of useless fodder, but within that fodder, you might be surprised and find what you are actually looking for.
- For some metal parts that have corrosion, I have used CLR which is a chemical cleaner that removes rust from metal. You can purchase this from most hardware stores.
- For chrome that is faded, chipped, or completely dull, there is not much you can do to remedy that situation. The only inexpensive alternative is if you can disassemble the chrome part and repaint it with a chrome paint like Alclad II. Alclad requires an airbrush and then requires sealing. It is the closest thing you can get to authentically vacuum-sealed chrome. Keep in mind, that any type of chrome paint that is applied with a brush will never look perfect like real chrome. Here's the Alclad II link: www.alclad2.com/finishes/highshine.html
- Although not required, I like replacing any bad looking screws with fresh ones. You can find a nice selection of screws online or even at Ace Hardware. It's a matter of preference, but if you're going to restore almost everything else, brown rusty screws become an eyesore to your almost perfect restoration project.
I'm sure others here will provide other valuable advice. Congrats on your DX Tetsujin-28 find. Enjoy the journey of restoring him!! -Michael

Thanks a bunch. That's some great advice. I struggled with the thought of selling this guy or keeping him but the idea of really cleaning him up is amazingly appealing and totally makes me want to keep him. Do collector's care about a cleaned up toy or do they care more about it's actual state over the years? I'm sure it boils down to preference for each collector, but what is the general consensus? Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Welcome to the site! That's one hell of a flea market find!! Congrats on the pickup. Is this your first foray into this hobby or do you have other Japanese robot toys in your possession?
Just as an FYI, this is not known as the DX version. The DX version is much smaller and simpler. This is known as Chokinzoku or by its nomenclature, SG-01.
In terms of fixing up or leaving as is, there are people on both sides. Its your toy so do what you want. Personally, I'm all for fixing up things. As a matter of fact, I just crafted a head crest out of sculpey this weekend for my Leopardin SOC that I lost. It makes a BIG difference in terms of display to have a more complete toy.

This is my first foray into this so I guess I got kind of lucky with my first find. I was a little wary to purchase him because his price seemed high but he looked to damn cool and I was able to talk the seller down significantly. I always liked the design of Gigantor especially his ridiculous nose, which makes its missing component all the more infuriating. I had looked at getting some sort of toy version of him in the past, but saw that he was quite expensive sometimes. I think that's what pushed me into getting him and it worked out after all. Thanks for the info on its name. The name designations are what has my head spinning. I'll adjust the description now. I guess I'll spend some time making repairs and generally cleaning it up. Should gorilla glue be fine to tape down those "chrome" strips where they've peeled up slightly?

Just an FYI Chrome is made in a chemical bath. It is either an electromagnetic plating process or a highly toxic 2 part chemical bath.
There is no paint in the world that even comes remotely close to chrome.
If you can remove a piece, there are literally thousands of machine shops that do automotive restoration for antique vehicles. It's not expensive and it's REAL chrome. Google it and find one near you... way better than paint.

Hi I too am new to the forum and have a collection of items including a mint TETSUJIN SG-01 that I imported from Japan (to the UK) in early 1980's (Japanese packaging). I am looking to sell some of the items and was wondering if anyone had any ideas of current values? I also have mint condition, imported in 1980's: CLOVER UNRIVALED-ROBOT TRYDER-G7, DALTANIOUS DELUXE POPY PB-81, GODAIKIN GARDIAN, CHOGOKIN VOLTRON LIONBOT GB-36. I'm not a dealer, just a crazy collector who collected too much! Be grateful for any advice.

Hi. Please start a thread of your own so your topic does not get lost. You should go to the vintage robots (chogokin godaikin etc) sub forum and click "new thread/new topic and repost.
You have some great items. I just purchased a mint godaikin (US version) of SG-01 tetsujin myself.
Price wise, the godaikin and tryder (tryder price also depends on size as there were many different size sets, the big ones are tough to find) are your best pieces and the daltanious would be in the middle. The remaining godaikins would be on the lower end of the spectrum.
The voltron would be in the low mid or high price range depending on if it is popy version, godaikin version, matchbox version, or bootleg. Based on your description, I am guessing you have popy or godaikin version.
Please let me know if you need more help. I will not explicitly offer pricing assistance until we see the condition of some of the items.
There is a very nice collector here I know who is looking for a tryder set. If you have the correct one he wants, he may be interested.
