simply put, Gundam Unicorn is light years better than Gundam Wing and the whole Gundam Wing seriers. But this is just my opinion. Just like how Gundam model kits nowadays are just way better than the ones in the pass. But in order for someone to like the Gundam Unicorn short series, you have to go back and watch those old Anime Series. Just so you can get an understand of the whole Universal Century timeline and some of the characters. Wing, Seed, Double 00, Turn A, and all the others are from different story time lines. I don't know what it is with the infatuation of the Gundam Wing series, but in term of the Gundam series that I've seen, I didn't find it all that good.
My favorite if I had to rate it would be like this
Gundam Unicorn Gundam 00 Mobile Suit Gundam Gundam Seed Mobile Suit Gundam Z Gundam Wing Gundam Seed Destiny
As for the movies, I didn't include them because I just didn't like any of them much. The Stargazer movie for the Gundam Seed series was a borefest. The Gundam 00 Awaking of the Trailblazer also wan't good either. With Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, that one was decent.
In terms of the regulars series, most of the story are rehashes. If you watch them you will see lot of similarities. Like the love that Kamille has for Seven. Awful lot like how Shin's love for Stella.
Or how Armuro Ray got the RX-78-2, it is just to similar to how Kira Yamato got the Strike.
I haven't seen Turn A, Gundam ZZ, the G Gundam Series, the X Gundam, also the F91.

I'm a UC kind of guy since I like how the saga has evolved into its epic proportions. And since Unicorn is the latest out of the gate, I put this OVA right up there with 08th MS Team. (hopefully unlike 08th MS Team it will complete on schedule!). I do also like Gundam Seed because its premise kind of mirrors the original Gundam series. A group of refugees escape a terrorist attack in a military carrier ship along with a lone Gundam prototype. For newbies who aren't into the original UC, I easily recommend checking out Seed. And of course, it spawned the stupid-popular "Aile Strike Gundam" that Bandai keeps making kits of. Speaking of Gundam that mimic the original story, I also like F91 - which was supposed to be a new series by the original staff to follow-up the UC timeline. But the project fell apart and we only have a stand-alone pilot movie. I like it because it's stand-alone and newbies don't need to worry too much about continuity (even though it does take place within the UC time-line - but decades later). Gundam Wing is weird that... you kind of have to sit through or else you don't get to enjoy the masterpiece that is Endless Waltz. Endless Waltz was an epic 3-part epilogue to the "Gundam Wing" alternate-universe featuring slick revamps of the multi-colour mecha team from the tv series but redone with more realistic military colours and kick-butt upgrades (For example, my favourite orange-red Gundam Heavy-Arms changed into a black and green quad-gattling war machine, etc... It caps off the huge 50-episode series and serves as the pay-off for those of us who watched the whole thing.

Being an oldschooler, the UC timeline would always have the highest appeal to me, although it has some of it's kinky moments (ZZ Gundam, anyone?). Most of the series / OVA that takes place in that timeline usually has good storyline and memorable characters. 08th MS team, War in the Pocket and Char's Counter Attack are really good, and F-91 is decent, even though a lot of people thought that the production was rushed. Still much better than Awakening of the Trailblazer (yecch!). Note that I've never seen Victory Gundam yet.
However, some of the non UC series are also good, like Turn A or the much underrated Gundam X. I don't really like Wing other than its mechas (Endless Waltz version), because the villains are not as complex as the ones in the UC timeline. G Gundam was fun to watch, but in my opinion, not really a true Gundam series due to its Super Robot-ish nature.
In my opinion, the SEED series is good for introducing new fans to the franchise, but to me, SEED Destiny was just horrible - it started off really good, then went downhill about 3/4 of the way. Too bad... it had a lot of potential. I really liked Gundam 00 despite the unorthodox Gundam design.. but as I said before, the movie just tanked big time.
Well, this is my pick of preference: 1. Z Gundam 2. Gundam 3. 08th MS Team 4. Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket 5. Char's Counter Attack 6. Gundam X 7. Turn A Gundam 8. Gundam 00 9. Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory 10. Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
I deliberately did not include Gundam Unicorn, because it's not finished yet. There's always a chance for a series that starts really strong to turn crap at the end. However, if it stays the way it is now, it could easily place in number 2 or 3 of my list, knocking Endless Waltz out.

My own opinion is woefully underinformed, because I'll be honest, I haven't watched a gundam series that's come out since 1996.
Personally, I'd rank the shows I've watched thusly, taking into account only the ones I've seen, obviously:
1. Gundam 08th MS Team 2. 0080 War in the Pocket 3. 0083 Stardust Memory 4. Gundam Zeta 5. Char's Counterattack 6. MS Gundam 7. Gundam Wing 8. Gundam Wing Endless Waltz 9. Gundam F91
... I guess I haven't actually watched 10 whole Gundam series'. Heh. Oh well.

I have the same top 3, in more or less the same order. I was just rewatching 08th a couple of weeks ago and I'd forgotten how utterly brilliant the Norris Packard sequence is in the last episode. 0083 is pure mecha porn with weaker characterizations than in 0080 and 08th. I'm cool with 4-9, too. Same here, as far as not watching anything else after EW. Damn, I'm getting old.

^ That's what a real robot series should be all about. It should be about the pilot and not the mecha they're piloting. There are no characters like Norris Packard in the later series anymore...
I bought a MG Gouf Custom after seeing 08th MS team... which was not constructed properly, sadly. But now I'm waiting eagerly for the Robot Damashii Goug Custom which is should be released in the near future.

Norris and the Gouf Custom were one of my favorite anime mecha sequences for quite a long time. Another high point is the Kampfer rampage in 0080; so brilliantly done in how it builds up - and ultimately ends (brutally), which was perfect for the whole tone of that series.

I'll rank the ones I've seen at least more than an episode or two of:
1. 0083 Stardust Memory (probably just for the MS designs) 2. Wing (got me into Gundam) 3. 08th MS Team 4. SEED (reeled me back in after I thought I was done) 5. Unicorn 6. Gundam 00 7. Zeta 8. 0080 War in the Pocket 9. G Gundam 10. Char's Counterattack 11. Gundam 12. Awakening of the Trailblazer 13. Gundam F91 Absolute last. Gundam SEED Destiny (can't believe I watched all of it!)

My favorites: 0083, MSG, 8th MS Team, 0080, Zeta Gundam, Char's Counterattack. I haven't yet had a chance to see Victory Gundam so I can't list that one though I may end up ranking it highly after viewing based on what I've read about it.

Absolute last. Gundam SEED Destiny (can't believe I watched all of it!) I did that as well. Still can't believe that the main hero status was transferred from Shinn to Kira Despite all of that, I still love the design of the Destiny Gundam, tho.

Wheres the love for Turn A? I think it's one of my favorite Gundam series' with a great plot and really well written characters. It holds its own as not just a great gundam show, but a great show in general.
