I'm confounded as well. There's one listed in Yahoo Japan for over 2 Million Yen (> USD35K), I always wonder if that YJ listing is a joke? Could someone enlighten us? I'm not posing the link to the YJ Grandizer. Below is the screenshot of the most expensive POPY listed in Yahoo Japan. Crazy!

Well, only the top 2 bidders know why they bid so high. Deadstock with a nice box doesn't show up often, and there are at least 3 or 4 versions of this toy. Maybe the 2 deep pocket bidders needed this version to complete their set. We'll probably never know.
As for the one on YHJ for the crazy price, it's been on there at least 3 years (when I started searching there). I would say it's maybe to attract attention to his other sales, but briefly looking at those, I think he's just insane.

the winning bid is just crazy (and in current economic conditions), and the grandizer is the more common version 2 we see on ebay. i am familiar with one of the bidders (having cross swords with him on a number of occassion in ebay auctions), and its clear that the person did not value the item too highly either.
i think this auction is just some freak of nature that happened with the right toy condition and buyer at hand, but guess it wont be repeated unless someone decides to sell a misb one ;D

The winning bidder apparently does Not seem affected by these modern economic times.
I say that Resentfully. Because, WHO in their right minds would spend THAT kind of money on something like this?!
And Don't tell me "...a Hard-core Japanese Robot Toy Collector", because that's just to shallow and easy of an answer... and I don't think any serious collector, Anywhere, in their right mind, would luxuriously burn that kind of money for stuff like That in place of his or her priorities, while so many people and nations in the world are facing economic hardships. I don't have time right now to clarify what I mean by this.
If I could state my wild guess I'd say the winning bidder must be a multi-millionaire who's been playing the Lottery like a game of checkers. lol ;D

Thinking on paper here:
It is the later version box (no missiles on Grandizer like the Jumbo) The diecast doesn't have stampings on the back like the first version.
-Can't see what latch mechanism is on the saucer.... There are variations there.
Near perfect box, or at least better than I've seen in about 3 years. Excellent, no chest chipping. -Very rare
Norm:1200 Box extra:300 Chest Premium:300 All packing materials premium:100 ----------- 1900
?? Foreign buyer extra cash discount 15-30% or $300-600 USD
Ehhh.....

Well, that's what I call an expert opinion. Interesting theory on how it breaks down. I didn't consider the horrible exchange rate and how that works both ways for buying. I've just focused on how much it sucks to want to buy something from Yahoo Japan auctions right now. I was just blown away by the price that was paid. But as we all know, if two bidders decide they really want it, who the hell knows where it can go.
