I pretty much agree with the top three pics, but there should absolutely be a Valkyrie in place of the Optimus Prime if it were up to me. Optimus might be one of the most popular (as the leader of the autobots etc.), but as far as transforming robots go, the Valkyrie set the mark of excellence.
The rest of them I'm sort of so-so with. I can see why they "should" be in the top ten, but too many of them don't appeal to me personally in a general sort of way. Towards the bottom ten I would have chosen a couple that provided form over function, like maybe GX-13 Dancouga, Godanner, or even Panda-Z.

While everyone is going to have different tastes and favorite robots, I totally agree with xiombarg - the list should definitely have had a Valkyrie on it.
And #1 should never be a doubt - the Alpha of all chogokin!

You crazy, Ed!! This list sux big time!! Where's Big Dai X and Gokaiser? (joke - just stirring the pot)
Like you said, there is no definitive list, but I generally like this. There will always be differing opinions. For instance, I would tend to agree with the inclusion of a Valk (perhaps Jetfire, the most popular? (at least here in the States)). Daikengo is questionable for inclusion in the top 10 - maybe Mechander should take its spot?
Voltes should be 2. It evokes such a powerful passion among so many collectors worldwide.
While the Black Getter is highly coveted and skyrocketed in terms of price, is it really one of the top 10? Or is it just the exclusivity of it that makes it so high? If it should be included at all, move it down much further?
Combattler is the bomb. Can you say #3? Of course, this is a personal fave, so I am biased. But it set the bar for combining robots before Voltes was issued. And that box art!!!!
What about the Gundam Combo set? Hmm... Not sure if top 10 or not. Just throwing it out there for discussion, especially based on the importance of the TV series.
Erik keeps noting that D-17 was one of the top sellers in Japan, but I guess its popularity outside of that country is not as large.
What about Golion? Wildly popular throughout the world, and likely the most bootlegged toy ever!! I think this should probably be top 10.

Yar, I thought it was odd that the grand daddy of all chogokin the Mekanda Technical Gasshin did not make it to the list. So is Voltron/Golion which is a global phenomena back at the heels of Voltes. Anyway it's my two cents, I believe we're literally spoilt for choices here, there is bound to be bots that will be missing from this list. like the Psycho Gundams....!

Funny you mention D-17. I completely agree that it is a classic and awesome design. Too bad it wasn't a bit bigger. Then of course an English dubbed cartoon would have done the toy more justice.

Another forgotten toy would maybe be some form of representation for Grendizer. While I don't think that the Popy Grendys would make a top 10 list, I think that the Grendizer SOC had maybe a pretty significant impact. Grendizer is probably the most popular robot in many parts of the world (France, many Middle Eastern countries, etc.). But then again, I guess a distinction needs to be made on how this list is derived, or what it represents. Is it most influential toys? Best design? Most popular? There could be a different twist for every top 10 focus list. Perhaps you should do a series of top 10 lists depending on angle.

I do think that the Black Ryoma deserves to be somewhere in the top five for a couple of reasons. The foremost reason being that it made collectors and figure companies sit up and take note that there are still new and original directions that robot design can go. The quality and weight of the figure was excellent, but the new sensibility of the figure is what seems really notable to me. Of course, the Ryoma was really just an extension of the Mazinger 1901AD aesthetic, but the Ryoma took the best of what that figure series had to offer, and left out all of the bad.

Funny how two of the top 10 are Mazinger robots, huh?!!! I completely agree with your list, well almost completely (about 80%). ;D Daibaron and Zambot should be replaced with Tetsujin 28 and the Takatoku Valkyrie imo.
