Hi all experts,
assuming the jumbos come in loose condition,
I have been wondering how to spot the difference :
U5 gaiking vs popy gaiking
Taiwan version T17 vs Popy T17
U5 mazingers vs Popy Mazingers
Mattel Draguns vs Popy Draguns
sounds very newbie but hope some seniors here can share ;D

the U5 versions are so close to the original popy sculpts. id say the fists differ very slightly and the makers mark. its a new sculpt trying to emulate the original as closely as possible.
the mattel draguns and popy versions werent so different other than the multiple releases of the US version that got worse and worse. the japanese versions never did the lightning bolt leg stickers. they kept it to the getter stripes.
for a quick answer on the Disco 17 Taiwan and the Popy, collectiondx.com has a great review on the taiwan bootleg.
has anyone here seen the first version bootleg? i have 2 of the second version that may or may not still be in production. mine smelled pretty new when i opened the bag, so it seems like a recent make.

the second release US versions got pretty bad, they left out the saw blades on Dragons arms and on the Mazingers, they got rid of the red chest piece and just made it a sticker on a raised detail., looked pretty bad. US Gaiking came late along with the second release and they dumbed that one down too..its a solid yellow body. the popy version had a black body with the yellow skull..I think it may have had different legs with "star swords" that came off the knee but Im not sure. If youre going to mess with Mattel, Id only mess with the first releases. I bought them all new as they came out back when I was a kid, damn they were great, got me addicted.

Thanks for the info bros... 1oldrobot: seems like the only way to differ the U5 gaiking is the logo of POPY am i right to say that? If that is the case I would rather buy 1 U5 rather than spend a few times more for a popy ...only difference is the better box art of popy's . I am thinking of getting a d17 , would you recommend the taiwan version?

DOE,
I have the Taiwan D-17 and I would recommend that over the Popy D-17 simply from a financial viewpoint. My D-17 doesn't have the problem that most people seem to experience; the fist shooting off without rhyme or reason. I haven't done it yet but I would buy the Popy repro stickers and the difference would be tough to notice (at least in pictures).
Bottom line; unless you can score a Popy D-17 for cheap, buy the Taiwanese version and put the money you saved into your next Popy Machinder that doesn't have a knockoff version. Just my two cents.......

1oldrobot: you might want to consider selling me 1 of your d-17 jumbo? ;D rodman75: Very true bro, I am going to do more research on the info 1oldrobot provided at collectiondx, if there is no big difference, no point in spending a mountain on a popy one Gettershadow: oops i should have spell out unifive instead, to avoid the confusion! ;D

wow, people keep track of who has what. i bought a third one last week for my buddy whos down on his luck but loves seeing my measly collection. i wouldnt mind moving one, but one of them was scored from a flea market and it has its problems. you do know where to get them, right? i think all of us bought from the same fella. gettershadow, the first time i read it i had written a big mattel vs. popy gaiking and thought id recheck since i think everyone knows the difference. we are aging men and our eyes dont work as good as they did in days of old. lol. U5 looks like US to me, too.
the unifive gaiking is darn close to being the same thing. get him, hes awesome. i saw a popy gaiking go for 800 bucks in the box on YJ a few months ago. i dont feel so bad not having him since the unifive does the trick.

hi guys the only other difference with the unifive version Gaiking I could see was the wheels were different and I agree unless you absolutely have to have the popy version I like the U5 for the price (now seems to be around $250-300 boxed) and it functions the same as the popy I also like the Taiwan D17. I have a few of them and the quality may be less than the popy version but again for the big price difference and with the addition of a repro sticker set they fuction and display well. I'm working on a repro set of wings and antenna from my originals to hopefully out fit the taiwans with.

I bought mine for a little under $400 earlier this year new in box. For me, the similarity to the Popy Gaiking was indiscernible. The only difference I could find was in my wallet! It all depends on your collecting preferences. In a perfect world we'd all own both versions, but that's not the case.

toyseeker - the wheels! thats right. other than the makers mark, thats the dead giveaway. looks like you have an original 17. cool stuff. my collection has no great popy stuff so theres no reason for me to post pics until my other collections tie in well enough to compensate. have you posted pics of your collection? love seeing the real stuff.

1oldrobot: read your post on this : "i wouldnt mind moving one, but one of them was scored from a flea market and it has its problems. you do know where to get them, right? i think all of us bought from the same fella" can give me some hint who you guys bought the taiwan version D17 from? I got no idea LOL Listening to all the feedbacks, I am now on hunt for a Unifive Gaiking and D17 Taiwan version, Gaiking's pet daikusaurus will have to wait a little longer ;D
