Cybertron: Unicron (Deluxe)
Unicron, destroyer of worlds, after being destroyed was re-activated and returned into a smaller body which transforms into a tank.
Review
I will review Unicron in three categories:
- Sculpt (Form and Color)
- Articulation (Movable Parts and how can it be moved)
- Fun Factor (How did I enjoy it)
Sculpt
[Tank Mode]
Unicron comes packaged in Tank mode. His tank mode resembled more of tanks that could be seen in Cybertron rather than an earth based tank, which makes a lot of sense. The treads of the tank is almost unseen covered by plates and spikes. There are also two large wheels in the end of the tank which free-wheels and adds a unique design to the tank.
Tank mode is around 5-5.5'' long and 3.5-4 inches wide.
Following the original look of Unicron, this tank is colored bright orange with a few gray parts, blue details are seen around the face of the tank.
Adorning the tank is a large cannon, which houses the toy's missle launcher and small laser gun. It also has two spiky part in the front of the tank, reminiscient of those from Armada Megatron. Two orange plates flank the tank and connected to them are two sets of spikes much like the Original Unicron's "wings".
A red translucent plate is placed between the laser gun and the big cannon, this is supposed to be a small radar dish for pinpointing enemies. But I'm not that sure.
[Robot Mode]
Unicron pretty much looks like his Armada counterpart with the horns, helm-shape head, shape of the feet and spiky parts... even to the coloring of his body.
Robot mode stands up to 4.5 to 5'' tall.
One thing that differs this Unicron from the original (Besides the extreme difference in size and alternate mode) is the face. This Unicron's sports a skeletal face, rather than the guy-with-a-moutasche facade that Armada Unicron had.**
This version also lacks any electronics, but the blood red eyes is light-pipped.
In accesories side, the spikes in the plates are actually his weapons, pop them off the shell and they turn into spiky blades. Not just that, the spike connected to this forearms (which turns into the mandibles of the tank) can also be position to look like large impaling spikes.
In this mode the cannon is placed on his right shoulder, while the small laser gun is on his left.
To keep it simple, the robot mode is faithful redesign of Unicron with a few updated touches.
** Cybertron Supreme Primus was released with a destroyed Unicron head which has its original face ripped apart exposing its skeletal frame. Tank Unicron's face may be an allusion to that event, seeing that this is Unicron's new body.
Articulation
Unicron's articulation is excellent. He has balljointed hips
Rohml's Kick Test
By this time you already know what the kick-test does, if not, then the kick test gauges a toys ability to do a pose plus the toy's ability to hold that pose plus that toy's ability to keep it self balance without the external help.
Unicron passes!
Though Unicron almost didn't make it since he a has a lot of kibble to prevent him from getting a good center of balance.
One problem that may appear from Unicron is his hips, like some ball joints, they are sometimes a little loose, however this is one of the simplest problems to fix. I personally used a piece of paper inside the ball joint to tighten hip of Unicron. Also be careful of the spikes as they could be easily removed and lost.
Fun Factor
As with other Cybertron figures, the toy's main gimmick is the Cyberkeys which unlocks a hidden power of the figure. In Unicron's case, it opens a panel in his chest. The panel opens to display a miniature version of what the original Unicron has in its chest. If you look closely, the panel (when opened) looks exactly like Armada Unicron's beak when in planet mode.
Unicron is simply obscure enough to have more than one mode, as seen in the picture he could be a mechanical crab with wheels. Fan-modes could be easily done with this TF since his posability allows him to places his body into different positions.
Definitely one fun toy!
Overall
One word I could say about the toy ... fun. Not just because its posable, but it shows us a well-designed toy that depicts a famous characters and twists him into something you won't expect of him... while retaining qualities which is reminiscient of his old self.
The price of item is around $12.75 or 700php and for me is well worth the enjoyment you will get from the item.
I give the item an B+.
Purist may counter that this toy is not show accurate since Cybertron does not show a Unicron tank, I say this toy was not designed to be a companion toy for the show, rather a redesign of a memorable character for the sole purpose of introducing a new storyline plot for Unicron and/or making money.
*Thanks for PROTOFORM-S for lending the toy for review.
