Hello,
I recently decided to "reclaim" some of the older jumbo Shogun Warriors that I had as a kid back in the 70's and basically stumbled into the whole deeper world of "Jumbo Machinders". While I always knew that Mattel had picked up the Warriors from an existing Japanese toy line I did not know just how much more was really out there until recently.
I've been doing a lot of research on my own and think that I am coming up to speed but do have a few questions I'd like to throw out there..
1. While I know that some of the Shogun releases differed greatly from the Popy originals, (Mattel's "Great" Mazinga, Gaiking, etc.) it also seems that some were basically the original Popy toy simply repackaged with a few accessory changes. For example, in the case of the Mattel "Mazinga" and "Raydeen" the only differences from the Popy "Great Mazinger and Reideen" seem to be the left arms which were included with the figure. Is this correct?
2. I know that back in 2000, Uni-Five produced a line of some reproduction Jumbos which were very close to the originals. I have read that the accessories produced by Uni-Five do not fit the originals and vice versa however do the actual parts from the Jumbos themselves swap? Could you use say a hand from a Uni-Five Great Mazinger as a replacement for a missing one on a Popy or Mattel toy?

As far as POPY versions, I'm sorry that I can not be of any help..all Originals are out of my price range...Except a mazinga I got for steal of a deal....I either have Mattels or KO's Good luck

There are several variations. Raydeen mattel 1st edition is close to the popy version minus the bowfist. As it has the softer head and curved knee area, and similar torso area. Could say there is version 1a with the single rivet for the shield and a 1b for the two screw version holding the right hand shield. The 2nd version has the flat area at the knees, is about 1/2" taller, a little difference at the torso area, and a firmer head and went away from the blow mold delta hawk missile. The 3rd version has a flat torso and no shoulder pieces, poor thing. Mazinga mattel 1st version is pretty close to the popy version I believe for the ship and knee area. The 2nd version has the chest piece yet, but different ship, and the knee area of the legs is different style as well. Then getting into the 3rd version, you have the none removable ship, and the sticker for the chest. www.collectiondx.com/category/machinder/jumbo_machinder has some nice reviews if you haven't already read those. Not sure if there is any website that compares the different versions side by side. When you do start comparing, it is amazing how many little things you find as well besides the bigger, easier items.

It certainly shows a lot of figures and variations that I was unaware of. Basically I am looking to pick up replacements for the Mazinga, Raydeen, Dragun and Godzilla that I had as a kid (and subsequently lost to a house fire within a year of getting them). I never really liked the Shogun Gaiking but after seeing the Popy version I may have to re-think that figure and look for the Uni-five release. I also recently discovered the Popy Jumbosaurus and Grendizer/Goldrake which may become the start of my "grail" list of figures to find. I never even knew about "Goldrake" as a kid however he is definitely a nice looking figure. Ultimately I would be happy with the Mattel versions of "Mazinga" and "Raydeen" however I would ultimately like to have the option to swap out their left hands for the original versions at some point which is why I was questioning the "parts swapping" compatibility between the Mattel, Popy and Uni-Five versions as I just want to be sure that if I stumble across a loose hand that it is likely to fit on whatever figure I happen to own.

AFAIK, the vintage arm attachments can be used on the Unifives. I actually have the parts to try this out, but the attachments are buried in boxes, and the jumbos are behind rows of other toys (inaccessible behind stacks of cartons of boxes). The only thing I had heard in the past was regarding the incompatibility of the missiles.

Well that is good to know. Some on-line reviews of the Unifive toys had questioned the compatibility with the vintage pieces which is what caused my concern.
I dove in head first over the holiday weekend and bought a Mattel Godzilla, Mazinga and Dragun as well as a Goldrake (saw it for sale and decided to jump on it).
So now I just have to wait until they get here to get a good look at what I bought.
Ultimately I'd like to find some alternate hands for figures like Mazinga and Goldrake (Grendizer) to replace the missile launchers that Mattel shipped them with however I understand that getting loose left hands from Great Mazinger and Grendizer is not going to be an easy thing to do.
