I'm getting either the VF-171EX with armor parts or the YF-29 for my birthday, but I can't decide which I like better, or if one of these is just a better build generally? Any opinions would be welcome.

Do you mean the Bandai VF-171 or Yamato VF-17? I have the YF-29 and while I think it looks good in fighter and gerwalk modes I find battroid a little off. It's also a precursor to the V2 VF-25's so IMHO it's not as well designed and that the V2 VF-25 was a precursor to the VF-171 it's safe to assume that model has the latest engineering in it. I also find it looks a lot better too. As for the Yamato VF-17 I hear it's a very nice toy, sturdy well built, and shows Yamato's expertise in transforming Valks but for me I just hate the head designs. It's like a cross between a Cylon and a bucket lol. So out of the three I would get the VF-171 with armor packs, it just looks badass!

Oops, fixed that... yes, the Macross Frontier 171EX with armor. Yeah, that's the one I've been leaning towards.
What is it you find off about the battroid mode on the YF-29? Too many hanging parts?... or proportions seem off maybe?

Proportions, legs are a little to long with the hip point to high plus I'm just not a fan of the head design. Also mine has pretty loose hips now so I just display it in Gerwalk which I think looks the best.

I like both, just not a fan of the paint schemes of either one. so I would choose the 171 since the armor covers up the garish 171 on the body.

I have both, and i think the YF-29 is more fun to handle but I am a sucker for moveable parts - the YF-29 has several while the VF-171 has even locked wings, which is more annoying than it sounds. But the VF-171 with armor parts will probably be more attractive to the eye (my eye at least !) The tampo printing on the VF-171 ex is indeed annoying, but the YF-29 has details in pretty much every color available!

I have both too and I prefer the YF-29. Like dimis, I love all the movable parts (built in missile pods/beam cannon) and the retractable wings. It is similar to the VF-25's in appearance and transformation which is a plus for me as well. Although, the VF171 is a solid toy, im not a fan of how it transforms (arms on top).And don't forget that the YF-29 is Alto's ultimate fighter in the Mac F movie Wings of Goodbye. c",)

I'm really on the fence. I like both a lot, but without any additional armor parts, I like the YF-29 much more, but with the 171EX armor.. hmmm.

I like the YF-29 better. But I have not received my Fast Packs for the VF-171EX yet. I never got the YF-29 Fast Packs, they were too expensive. The YF-29 has lots of fun gimmicks like the turret on top and looks awesome in Gerwalk mode.

From a looks perspective I like the 171 with armor more. It's just super bad ass looking.
YF-29 is fun with lots of gimmicks. I'm just not a huge fan of it. Too many parts sticking out in bot mode.

Me too!!! It's supposed to come out end of this month!! What? I thought the VF-171 Armor doesn't come out til December? Ok, let me revise my choice. If it was just the Valks, no Armor/Super pack, then the YF-29. Armored 171 vs non super pack YF 29, then the 171EX. |

Look-wise, I like the VF-171EX Armored. It sports the more traditional blocky armor look with the iconic Hikaru homage color scheme. The robot proportion is also very nice. Not too thick, not too skinny.
Toy-wise, the YF-29 is a better toy though. Even though it doesn't have all the latest VF-25 Renewal improvements, its structure works better, the toy is more solid, and the fighter mode is more attractive. VF-171EX is kind of frustrating. Some joints being too tight causing torso locks easy to unlock whenever you try to move the legs, so you end up trying to fix the figure instead of just simply posing it. Mine has not very sturdy ankles either, so I don't try to pose it in any extreme poses (even though it has better ankle range of movement).
I would pick YF-29 if I were you, when it seems that you like the looks of both. Then pick the better toy out of the two.
