Anyone interested in seeing how Mattel's new Voltron looks next to the vintage LJN/POPY mold, see attached.
It took almost a year of getting one lion every two months. It was just like mowing lawns to afford Matchbox lions back in 1985 and took about as long.
The final product- I love it. I don't need no stinking chrome on a jumbo. I had that on the trendmasters 19" one and it was meh.
Combined, it cost about $300 for the Voltron and all the pilots. That's a standard new jumbo price.
Awesome!

It's 1986 all over again at my house. Giant Voltron and masterpiece transformers. It's almost a replica of my dining room table back in the day except they're all twice the size and engineered like a Krups coffee maker.

Nice! I have the LJN also, boxed. I didn't think the Matty Collector one was that big (knew how tall it was, but never thought of comparing the two).

Hey Christ,
I still have to give the nod to the LJN. He looks far better IMO. Your LJN looks to be in particularly good condition, much like the rest of your collection! Awesome!

How about compared to the Shogun Golion by Toynami?

I'm still going with the LJN. I'm not sure if the Toynami is made from Polyethylene but I don't think it is. I guess I like the LJN because it's almost identical to the Popy version and I'm partial to the Popy JM's as well as the Mattel Shogun JM's.

I agree with rodman's opinion. The Matty does look nice for a big/modern toy. But the Popy/LJN is one of the best non-diecast sculpts out there for that toy period.
I'm not a jumbo collector but the LJN is literally the one jumbo that i dont mind having, and is one toy I don't think I would ever consider selling, and I have thought about unloading quite lot of stuff over the years.

I second this. The LJN is just so much in the style of the Popy and Mattel Jumbos.

Thanks for showing this side by side pict, it's interesting to see it like that and gives a better idea. But that thing is too far from the real Machinder concept for me to get it, just because it's big is not enough I think. But it seems like a nice toy once it's put together.

Doesn't the Popy also have missile docks?

Doesn't the Popy also have missile docks? Yes. They are the same(or very similar to the) shoulder docs found on the Mazinger Z Jumbo. A different set of (albeit very similar) decals. And missile firing Lion head hands. Plus the sand bottle leg weights. I believe the same molds were used from the Popy Go Lion to create the LJN Giant Commander Voltron or a very closely imitated re-sculpt was commissioned. On my LJN there are faint circular marks inside the lion mouths hands where the missile launching mechanism would have poked through. And on the bottom part you can see the screw holes and area where the plastic housing bolted on. Too bad one of the repro-parts makers on here haven't just recast the mechanism found in the Popy so us LJN guys could have the best of both worlds! Missiles Launchers and a Sword! Will

If you look closely at the legs of my LJN Voltron, you'll see I have repro popy missile holders and red and green missiles mounted there. No missile launchers though.

I don't believe anyone makes the Voltron fists. Sorry.
If I ever get a Popy version to look at the missile shooters. Those, may be of interest to make.

Thanks bourno! No biggy. He's been without for some time. I'll keep looking for a beater to rob of parts.

How about compared to the Shogun Golion by Toynami? I made a video comparing all the big voltrons to the Mattel one...one of them gave its life to the making of this vid

Nice vid! Thanks! I forgot about the toynami jumbo. The wall of voltrons is very impressive.
I have always wondered what the differences are between the different vintage voltrons and started a thread in the vintage section. Your input would be much welcomed!
