Here's something I just realized... The cartoon "Transformers" lasted for 3 seasons in the mid 1980s. The first two seasons were set in the present(meaning the 80s), while the third season, along with the movie they made just before that, was set several years in the future. The time period that the movie and the third season were set in always seemed so futuristic and a long way off. It just seemed so distant. But do you know what year the movie is set in?.... 2005! That's right! 2005! We're living in the "Transformers" future NOW! That's so depressing, isn't it? Where'd all that time go? I wonder if we've lived up to the vision of the future offered by "Transformers"? I remember in the third season, human beings were depicted as having colonies in space and being able to travel to other planets, so I guess not. We've been able to come up with some cool stuff, like iPods and the world wide web, but we've still fallen short. That's depressing, too.

Well, the big idea back a few decades ago was to have colonized the moon by now. If you think about it, we're on our way. We've got a space station up there. I don't necessarily see it as depressing. If you really think about it, most of the best innovations the human race has had was within the last 50 years: penicillin, television, space travel, computer technology. We've come a long, long way in a short amount of time and there's still room for improvement. Take a practical example: look at the movies made in the 80s compared to stuff we have now. That's quite a striking difference for only a few years.

There's progress, but we sure as hell slowed down comparitive to the early 20th century when scientists were doing crazy stuff like experimenting drugs on themselves, etc. The human race just got a whole lot wimpier, if you ask me. But then, I suppose a couple of shuttle explosions will do that to you. What I'm saying is that there was a lot more innovation in the last 100 years than in the last 50 years, if you get what I mean.
My first realization that we slowed down was that Khan wasn't banished into space cryogenically frozen in 1994 aboard Botany Bay (later to be found floating around in deep space by the USS Enterprise)...

it was probably because ppl seek pleasuring themselves more than bettering themselves. I teach, and alot of my kids don't care that they are failing. Maybe i was just in the classes as a kid where we were obsessed with straight A's?

Hang on, I just thought of an explanation as to why the real world hasn't been able to live up to the way the year 2005 is portrayed in "Transformers."
In "Transformers", when the Autobots' space ship crashed on Earth after leaving Cybertron, they were able to grant humanity access to all the advanced technology they brought with them. That's why people in the cartoon were able to achieve so much more progress by the year 2005 than we have been able to.
