SO i just managed to get a first release Mazinger. I am pretty excited about this purchase. He has the black right fist and joined knees. His leg clips are in perfect shape and original. I thought that he came with 4 original long fin missiles but when I received him he was rattling so I looked inside and found a fifth missile. I was pretty excited. Unlike most of my other jumbos, I think I am going to go for original parts as much as possible with this guy as I restore him with the exception of the repro popy left fist I ordered from bourno and some new knee decals. I have a set of original swords already and 5 long fins, and I will take my time in finding on original brain condor and the rest of the missiles. It may sound silly to put the effort into a pretty common jumbo but this is the one I remember most from my childhood. I live on the west cost and never saw any of the cartoons that the east coast got. I watched Tranzor Z at a friends house and played with his Mazinger toy and my Godzilla. So this one has special meaning to me.

That first Mazinger is a great jumbo. I am like you in that the American Shoguns have special meaning for me from my childhood. Good job keeping him as original as possible -- that's what I did with mine also, and he looks great! One cool thing that I did and you may want to consider later is getting a second and third edition also. The three of them look great standing all together in a line!

Agree with you on the editions. I got a 1st, 2nd & late edition and a UniFive edition w/Jet Scrander. They look fantastic displayed.

I would love to have that U5 with the scrander. But what I am really looking for now is the U5 Mazinger Z (or a Popy -- LOL). I would love to have him to go with the Shogun Mazingers.

I have to agree, a Popy Mazinger Z and a Great Mazinger display really well together.

I have been looking at the one you restored, Luclin, and you did a beautiful job on that one. The repair of the head crown looks flawless! If I ever find a good, cheaper broken Maz Z, I may be contacting you about repairs!

Guys I agree that the three look great together. I will have to reconfigure my display to put the three on them together. I was thinking about making some wings for at least one of these guys. I think that the wings on jumbos just bring a little something extra. The only ones i have with wings are Voltron and Gaiking.

I didn't realize just how different versions 1 and 2 were until I put them next to each other. I love the look of the first one even more now.

I think it is strange how the stance of the legs is so different between 1 and 2

I wonder why they changed the legs at all. I mean they already had the mold made for the first one. why change it? It's like the raydeen jumbo. They changed the leg mold between the first and second editions.

The wider more heroic stances of the 1st edition Mattels (later edition Popy's) are much cooler than the stiffer straight legged stances Mattel incorporated later. I presume cost was the #1 factor. Maybe the straighter designs proved a better or more consistent yield with less cost. And even though it threw off the symmetry of the figure the decision Mattel made to include the shooty accessories as part of the main figure was great(as a kid).
I like the 1st & late edition of both Great Mazinger & Raydeen. And I even like the cheesy lightning bolts on (late edition)Dragun.
The wings for both Mazinger & Great Mazinger turn the cool figure into something Awesome! Brilliant accessory!

Ps. What I'd really love is a 1st edition Popy Great Mazinger with the tall crown & even more exaggerated proportions. It's bloody awesome! Someday...someday...

I think I have figured out why they changed the stances. The first edition Mazinger won't fit in a second or third edition box. It is too wide at the shoulders and the legs. I would imagine if Mattel could shave a little off the box size and the figure size, they would save money not only on manufacture but on shipping.
I agree, Will -- a Popy first Mazinger is definitely on my wish list. I love that super blocky figure!

Oh I hadn't thought of box sizes. Keeping them all uniform and increase preciously limited Retail shelving space win win!
Great thinking outside the box there Faulkner!

So I thought I would Share a quick update about my Mazinger quest. My plan is to keep him as original as possible including a set of long fin rockets. He came with 5 and I had a set of original swords so I had that going for me. Recently I saw on ebay a Vintage Japan Toei Space Ironmen Kyodain Skyzel Dress-Up Kit. As I looked at it I realized that it came with 6 original long fin rockets. So I bought it for a whopping $20. Now I only need 3 more for a complete set. (in case anybody has 3 laying around that they are looking to sell) Add to that a custom blue brain condor (thank you illavata) until i find an original, and I think he looks pretty amazing if I do say so myself.

It was my understanding based on what I read about the differences between 1st and 2nd release Jumbos is that the original molds were thrown out by Popy because they didn't think they would be making any more of them at that time.. later, Mattel asked for more but Popy had already stopped selling the Great Mazingers because they had saturated the Japanese market for them and had moved on to other characters. Popy then made up the 2nd release molds and sent the product to the US.. later on in the 3rd release, I think Mattel was making their own molds and making Shogun Warriors right here in the US. I read that the characters that Mattel were using by that time were "old hat" back in the Japan and had long been discontinued.
