I didn't want to derail Lex's sales thread with this topic, so I decided to start another one here. I have been wanting to build a custom Doublas for a while now and the conversation in the other thread helped me to see that there are a lot of different ways that this could go. My original goal was to get the figure to look like a "Popy Style Jumbo" while keeping the overall appearance as close to what the character looked like in the anime series.. Personally, I had been planning to paint and build up a junker Mazinger Z, connecting the heads to the torso through the holes in the chest left by taking out the heat sink pieces. I have already picked up a junker Maz Z body and most of the rest of the parts that I will require. I just need a quiet afternoon or two to sit down and work on the sculpt for the model for the head. So far, I've only been able to put about a half hour of time into the head sculpt... However, after considering how far off of the appearance from the anime the original Popy figure went while still being popular, I wanted to ask opinions here before I put any serious effort into this.. Do you think that I am going in the right direction?

Looking at cartoon shots, and the SOC version. They seem to have an angle edge for the beak area and not a flat spot. Also, the top of the head is shown more like a spear tip shape than rectangular. But, like you mentioned, trying to combine looks, it isn't easy. The jumbo head is so flat and just does not look like the anime that well. The original Doublas jumbo head looks pretty butt ugly to tell the truth. So, are you carving out of hydrostone? The teeth look good for size. When I was doing my Spazer, I leaned toward the SOC version as a defining shape to combine aspects of the original ship, and looking over different cartoon drawings, they were similar, but the ship was drawn differently from the artists. Here are some photo links that I was looking at. altjapan.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341bfd2253ef00e552852d4a8833-800pi1.bp.blogspot.com/_8s9Ht9fYR7c/R_oyiMAERiI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/prFnagd5rsc/s320/Doublas+M2+04.jpgusuarios.iponet.es/wysit/cap1.jpgwww.robot-japan.com/images/stories/Bandai/SOC/GX-26_Doublas_M2_Bandai_SOC/2.jpgI may have to start to collect some of the Fewture stuff, it looks wicked cool.

Running down the nose (from the forehead to the tip of the beak) that area isn't flat, but a sharp edge like a 45degree corner between both sides of the face. That sculpture there looks good for starters, except for the area I mentioned.
Lemme see if I can find an old 3D object part of a Doublas-M2 head I modeled years ago, since I was gonna use it for my Maz movie project. Otherwise I'll have to rebuild the model.
I've got other projects in my que... I'll try to get it done asap and post front/side/rear/top/bottom pics so y'all can use as reference.

see this is the same issue I'm having......I pulled up Doublas, and searched it in google pictures, and looked at everything out there...but there are sooooooo many styles..but the question I asked, was, what would Go Nagi like ? and what would look truly POPY style While trying to also do Garada's head, I mentioned that maybe I should just sculpt the head, to my likes, but I don't want to just build this for me and my boys, but for sale, to other jumbo fans...so it's not just what I like, but what will catch the eye of Mazinger Z fans !!!! I really like the start you have going, but like the others mentioned, it's more of a crisp edge and beak like.......but if yours looks better than mine, you need to cast it, and send me 2..LOL Good luck buddy, and please keep us all posted !!!! And remeber that the top of doublas shoulders are 2 humps...IE top of a heart..or 2 boobs !!!

The large black hose is from a small shop-vac, I used the smallest hose you see....also with the doublas, I would really love to have the hands open , to show his claws...I'm trying to figure out how to use Godzillas hands ?

I like the heads on the lil Maxfactory vinyl toys. It's a nice compromise of cartoon and stylistic choice that fits. I think it might be a good base to work from.

The piece in the picture is made from clay. Once I have a head in the generally correct size and shape I will make a quick mold from that, cast a replica in stone and finish the finer details of the sculpt on that 2nd piece.
The flat edge to the front of the nose is a compromise for the media (clay) which can ultimately be sanded down to a better edge in the 2nd stage of casting. The top of the head can also be sanded down to give a slight curve to the top.
And I do know that there have been numerous interpretations of the character over the past 40 years (some of them better looking) where the head shape has been altered considerably. Even the Popy jumbo version looks very little like the images from the Mazinger Z series. They clearly blunted the front of the face on that figure (probably due to safety concerns) almost to the point of it appearing like an SD version of the character.
That was why my original intention was to build a figure with heads more closely in appearance to the look from the 1st series. My idea was to attempt to keep the overall deviation in Doublas' appearance to roughly the same degree that the Mazinger Z jumbo was from its original appearance.
Thus rather than giving it a SoC or OVA look, I chose to emulate the original appearance of the character from 1972-1974 in an attempt at creating a "truer" jumbo style villain of the period.
This would be my attempt to (once again) correct what I have felt was a mistake on the part creators of the original toy.
As to the hands, while open claws might look cooler if done right, the early Jumbos of the 70's are all modeled with closed fists so I will probably stick with that.

Well, in their defense I think that the Villains line was more of an afterthought on their part as the figures really don't share much of anything in common with the Machinders in terms of style, function or materials.
Ultimately I think I'll work out at least the rough model for the Doublas head and make my decision as to whether to move onto a "complete" piece based upon what the mock-up of the figure ends up looking like.

I think he needs a little more head....the top is too flat, and close to the eyes...thats going by the picture of the toy, in this thread...I jumped from your mock-up to the toy, and thats just a thought.....

you may actually want to get a few doublas figures and work from there. id stick to "traditional" versions. the maxfactory that will posted is my favorite version of him and maybe the "modern standard."

The heads on this one are perfect, because they have that forehead stickin out slightly in the anime. These heads here got da billboard action going. But they can be trimmed in somewhat. After their done the tops can be painted black just like they are in the anime. They'll work. BTW, leave some space behind the eyes for the horns. zozo-mag I like the heads on the lil Maxfactory vinyl toys. It's a nice compromise of cartoon and stylistic choice that fits.
