I'm pretty new to collecting so I wasn't there when they released to 1901 ad series. I just got the Hong Kong version of mazinger z.
What a incredible and creative take on mazinger! Everything from the face design to the smaller scale and the way the pilot gets in.
I'm not craZy about articulation and his high heels, but overall great design.
What inspired this line? If anyone knows the background is love to hear it

I don't know much about how the line came to be. I know it was designed by Yusushi Nirasawa, the same artist who designed Fewture's own Devilman figures. He does some great, but somewhat creepy stuff - google him. The sculptor, Taku Sato, went on to design the much more successful Getter Robo and Mazinger 1969 EX Gokins.
It's an original Fewture concept; it wasn't based on an obscure alternative Mazinger manga one-shot or anything like that.

If I was to guess... I think it's sort of based upon a Frankenstein type dynamic, or of some combination of the old world mechanical era with mad scientists etc, but that's just my impression. It's sort of steampunk-ish, especially when you look at the villains, but it's not exactly typical of that genre of design.

I paid 45 about 6 months ago. Prices vary from 2-300 then the occasional 45 dollar one. The Garada is the most expensive sometimes 700-1000.

The Garada is the most expensive sometimes 700-1000. W-w-w-w-w-what? Are we talking about an actual sale here, as in "someone actually PAID $1000 for one", or just the usual eBay scalpers club going fishing? Because if someone is really ready to pay a grand for a Garada, I got your poison, baby! ;D

there was a 2-pack and a 3-pack, iirc (maz, garada and aphrodite) - with complete nitro scrander... shouldn't this thread be in the 'soc, src, fewture, brave gokin section'?

I bought the three pack from Japan about five years ago and it cost me $75. I remember thinking that seemed like a lot! I wonder how much I could get out of that now? At around that same time I picked up three Garadas back when they were going for around $25 each because I just had that feeling that someday they would be sought after, and they were so cheap anyway. I've sold two of them so far for $200 and $250.

i find it peculiar that the 'standard' (blue & gold) version appears to be harder to find than the repaint versions -- unless the repaints were produced in more numbers...

I think they kept producing them in China until the demand was gone. The hardest one to find is the original yellow one, which doesn't look as good as the red, but they are fairly rare to find these days.
