It seems to me that the price of this toy has been skyrocketing lately, especially in Japan. Or maybe it was always high and I just finally noticed. Not sure. I was fortunate to get a Japanese boxed one not too long ago for a great price, but the price I paid is not typical of a normal deal. I may be wrong, but I would guess that this would run about $200 or so. You would be lucky to find one for $150. Anyway, I would say try to talk them down to $200. Maybe someone else can chime in so you can get a second opinion. Checking ebay, here's a Godaikin version that sold for $245: www.ebay.com/itm/godaikin-popy-daitetsujin-17-new-in-box-robot-japan-/140906000166?pt=Vintage_Antique_Toys_US&hash=item20cea6ef26Some loose ones sold for less, but they were incomplete or broken. And being loose, of course, affects value...

Another Godaikin version sold at an auction house recently for $270 (including fees), while in the same auction the Japanese version sold for only $150 (my pickup ).

It is not a huge toy. Maybe 6 or 7 inches tall? But it is pretty solid, transforms into a fortress, and overall is a pretty nice toy. I dig the source material too (i.e., the original live-action show). The price is kind of high for a medium sized non-combining robot toy, IMO, but that seems to be the going rate (market value) these days. That is why I mentioned the $150 price - that is probably what I would be willing to spend on one, but I am a notoriously frugal buyer who prefers to wait for a deal rather than jumping when I seen one available. But many other common toys that are smaller sell for this much. Look at the Gaikings, for instance. Those are smaller and more common, but they still sell for $250 and up! So it all depends on your individual preference. I think $200 is a very fair and good price. $250 is not necessarily a bad price for it, but you can probably do better. Again, this is just one person's opinion. I would recommend waiting until a few others chime in and offer their opinions so you can get a good mix of feelings on this matter.

My pleasure. I am always glad to offer help and have an opportunity to discuss these toys further. In general, I hate to say "yes" or "no" as to whether a person should buy an item. That is always a very personal choice. I don't know if the person will like it as much as I might, or what they are willing to spend on a toy. Personal preferences and finances play a large part in this hobby. But I can give further information on a toy and tell them if I think it is a fair deal or not. BTW, I meant to get up a new gallery listing for this item on our website ( robot-japan.com/ ). I had taken photos but never uploaded them yet. Maybe this will be the kick in the ass I need to finish the job.

Is there two different versions of the toy? Like the antenna when in fortress mode is different between the 1st version and subsequent releases? Okay found the article on this, pic below:

Hi there,
Is popy the only version you are looking for? From the phooto, it is the 2nd version and should be an instruction sheet included. For USD about 250, you may get a Daitetsujin 17 including box close to mint complete set in Godaikin version. For a popy 2nd version including box close to mint complete set, the price about USD 500 or even higher. Hope the information provided is useful to you.

arkboy, I was not aware there were different versions. I have owned several of these, and I have only seen the ones with the knob at the end of the antenna.
chogokin777, considering condition and price, I would pass on that particular piece.

As much as I know, the main differences between the Popy 1st and 2nd version are box art, antenna and albow screws. Have heard that the colors between both are slightly different as well, but not confirmed yet. The prices of Popy stuff are getting higher and higher especially recent years. It's hard to find Popy stuff close to mint even at expensive prices. That's why personally, I prefer Godaikin than Popy version in terms of price and condition.
