The one piece fandom is huge! Much bigger than chogokin collector i would think. If you visit Akihabara in Tokyo one piece is everywhere. In comparison, only a few stores carry chogokin products So from that respect it's not a niche product.
This product, like the Frankie made before, maybe to lure one piece fans to the high end toy arena. If it works there is a lot of money to be made.
Regarding previous comment about the slow pace of the one piece anime, I totally agree. BUT, the manga is where it's at. The manga is very good and draws in many fans. Go read the manga before making judgement on one piece.

That's why the story is so slow. 90% of the time the manga is also better becuAse it has details the anime skips. Attack on Titan however is the exception - the anime is so beautifully done it almost rivals the manga IMO

IMO... The engineering is superb (Bandai SOC usually is). The Anime is very nice. If I were into the genre, I would pick it up.
But not my cup of tea... Hence, I think it's priced too high. But time will tell how much of their target audience is willing to shell out the $$ for this toy.

OK, on the recommendation of those here, I started watching this series with my kids. I am about 15 episodes into the show. They love it and are bugging me to rent more. But personally, this show just irritates me. First of all, I can't stand the voices (watching the dubbed version because of the kids). But worst, each episode is only about 2 minutes of storyline. Everything is sooooooooooooooo dragged out. For example, an episode starts in the middle of a battle (which started 3 episodes earlier). Two characters talk for about 5 minutes, while I guess everyone else is just standing around? They charge past each other, delivering a few blows. Then another 5 minutes of chatting. Then they attack each other again. Then more chatting. Then a break. Then they come back and replay a few minutes of everything you just saw. By the end of the episode, maybe only a few minutes of actual happenings occurred. OMG - shoot me now! Sorry, I tried, but this is pretty much unwatchable. I will rent it for the kids, but I will use my time more wisely. I think one of the huge issue here is watching the dub. I could not finish half an episode with dub, let alone 15... Second, One Piece does have a very slow start. It does not get interesting until Usopp's story start, then it gets better with Sanji's intro, then even better with Nami (first time made me teared up starting in this arc). And to watch the show, you don't need to rent. Just stream from Hulu.com for free. However, dubbed episodes are limited to the first couple seasons if I remember correct, so another reason to watch it subbed. The Japanese voice talents are way way better. But I do agree on the pacing on the TV series, it does drag especially when the story is slow (transitions from one big arc to the next, or fillers). So the manga does a much better job in this department, with the sacrifice of great voices, music and animation. This show is really great, a very good mix of fun, silliness, adventure, drama, friendships, action, and badassness all wrapped into one. There aren't really any shows/manga out there quite like it, except the ones that try to mimmick it later. Hopefully you will find yourself enjoying it more, when you give it a second chance.

I feel sorry for anime fans who haven't watched or read one piece...

I am not catching your drift (sorry, I never watched DBZ, so your insult is lost on me). Are you saying I am looking for nonstop action? I will assume you are insinuating that. Did I say that above? Not that I am aware of. I don't care if its action or not. I want a story to progress, not have 6 episodes to finish a 5 minute battle (or any other part of the story). That is not storytelling. That is a waste of 3 hours of my time. Sorry, I gave this a try, and it just does not appeal to me. If others love this, then great. But don't expect it to appeal to everyone.
As others have said, maybe the manga is better. My older son read some and also indicated that it was better paced.

That wasn't an insult but an actual question as to what your expectations were. You don't like the show that's fine. However you come across as wanting instant satisfaction when that isn't OP's style. You also have to remember this is shown weekly in Japan and hence their going to recap the previous episode for people that missed it that week to bring them up to speed.

I love one piece but even I am tired of the anime's slow pace. Manga is better if u want more story details, nice art work, and a faster pace.

One Piece has tremendous stories to tell, many makes you laugh, some makes you very pumped, others make you shead manly tears. There has no anime or any TV show that depicts brotherly love as deep as it did, by just watching 3 little rascals playing their 'pirates game', nor had any show ever had the power to have made me cry like a baby for a ship (yup, a frigging SHIP! This sounds odd even to my cry baby wife LOL). But it is a very long journey in order to get to the good parts, so I can see that it may not be your cup of tea.

I have watched a few episodes and I really enjoyed it. The unique character designs, humor and story make this stand out, IMHO. I'm going to get this one for sure

This may seem off-topic but I noticed that majority of the OP figures that I've seen out in the market are all static figures. How come they haven't produced proper, articulated action figures?

They have made a few. But the joints and sculpt just don't look very good, so they are not really popular and Bandai phased them out very soon. They were part of the S.H.Figuarts series if I remember correctly. And hence the static Figuarts Zero statue series for One Piece (Zero probably means zero articulation). Franky and Franky Shogun are one of the few candidates that work well with articulation, due to their design being robotic.

Yeah the OP figure arts were half assed. Even so they could have at least finished giving us the original five. I keep hoping maybe they'll return to do the time skip versions but the Japanese love their Statues.....

From researching One Piece, I am finding it to have a HUGE following. The fan base seems large. (I haven't watched episodes yet, but I will try to check it out.) I think, trying to intro it to the SOC line is inconsistent. I think SOC as more Robot oriented, where as One Piece is more Manga style. I can see the move on Bandai's part to lure Franky fans to SOC or even vice-versa. It should be interesting. I think the large market will get weeded down... Going from a $20 per figure to $200+ price is a BIG jump for most fans.

$20? Sorry kingdom Figuart zeros and POP figures range from $40-$75! And those are just statues!

Ya I was just referencing what someone said before on the figures... But these guys are way TOO detailed for $20 each, so ya I can see them asking $40+ for them... They are nice...

Yeah, those Grandline Men series from Banpresto can be had for $15-20 a pop if you know when & where to buy. They are very nice for the price, and what you don't normally expect from a UFO Catcher game machine.
Bandai's Figuarts Zero cost more, due to the extra accessories and nicer packaging. But the paintjob and sculpt are not quite on the level of Grandline Men & Ladies in most case.

I've paid similar - $60+ per piece for other small statues (DC / Bowen stuff). And really it's the quality sculpt and paint jobs.
Pretty cool looking series.
(That's the awesome part of being on these boards, I wouldn't have know about the Grandline Men if not for this thread... I am defiantly not buying FRANKY, but I might pick up one of pirate figures.)
