Yeah I’ve been waffling back and forth between PG Exia and MG Deep Striker. Knowing I’ll probably eventually pick up both, haha. But I already have the Fix Figuration Deep Striker, so I might get PG Exia first since all reviews have been pretty much overwhelmingly positive.
Not sure about the Deep Striker as a comeback model though, since its pretty much a brick kit. If you want to see some recent advances, I’d suggest the following:
MG Freedom 2.0 (and MG Justice, MG Providence which both use the same frame) MG GM Sniper II: Kit of the year for many reviewers last year. MG Jesta, fav grunt suit from Unicorn. Great weapons and part separation, HG Gundam The Origin, any Zaku variant. These are amazing for HGs and cheap. I like them better than the RG versions. IRon Blooded Orphans 1/100 Full Mechanics series, these are close to MGs of the past with full inner frame and quite different builds. A lot of the frame is exposed by design, so you’ll enjoy detailing them up; I like the Vidar, Graze variants, Grimgerde, and Barbatos 6th form. MG ZZ 2.0 , haven’t built this yet but all reviews say it’s amazing engineering and solid, even as a transformation kit. I remember the first MG was a plastic grenade. RG Unicorn, Same as above, a feat of engineering fixing most of the gripes people have had with the transformation.

I think I may still opt for the Deep Striker, only because I’m a big Sentinel fan and because I regretted never getting the GFF of it all those years ago. I’d also be tempted by a FAZZ 2.0 if they do that eventually - love the design, and I built the OG version many years ago.

I hear you man, I recently just got the Model Graphix Sentinel book and its still amazing how well the designs hold up. I'm sure they will eventually put out a FAZZ 2.0. which is why I haven't gotten the ZZ 2.0 yet; I just love the FAZZ color scheme so much more as well as the modified feet, head, and cannon. They already have 70% of the base kit already...this will hopefully be a good year for Sentinel fans, since it's 30 anniversary and Bandai should be planning a lot of tie-ins.
I just recently built the MG ZPlus C1, and besides a few ill-placed seam lines particularly on the sides of the lower legs it's amazing how well the kit and the design has held up. Since they recently released the EWAC Jegan, I hope they do a EWAC Nero soon.

So those of you who suck at painting as much as I do, would you rather do only minimal necessary detailing and risk it looking worse than if it had none at all?

Don't be afraid to paint. I would suggest to start with panel lining with gundam marker to add details. Don't worry if you screw up, it can easily be cleaned with a eraser. Once you finish detail with panel line, just do a flat top coat over it. This will get rid off the toy like plastic shrine and give it much a better look. You can find some nice tutorial on panel line and apply top coat on YouTube.

I think you're underestimating just how bad I am at painting.

I think you're underestimating just how bad I am at painting. Dont be afraid, its fun but time consuming. Like what others said start with panel lines either ink or pencils. Then move on to other details. Cant go wrong painting it, if its really bad you can go for a worn out battle damage look. Just remember when hand painting, thin out the paint and use light and progressive strokes. Dont use thick paint which can clog up/bubbled the surface.

I'm just sticking to gundam markers but I can barely do that properly. For me it's more a progress of "paint, wipe, paint, wipe, paint, scream expletives, wipe and give up".
What I do find funny tho is that even with the minimal paint apps I gave the HG Wing Zero, it probably looks a little better than the RD.

You know there's a panel line accent color wash from Tamiya that would probably help.

If you're just talking about panel lines and small fills, I would recommend Flory's Wash. Water-based clay wash, so damp paper towel after it dries is even easier. No need to fuss with thinners or solvents or it eating paints and off-gassing fumes. Price is about the same, too. Just recently tried the stuff, and boy was I impressed.

I just finished the Nillson Works PG Red Frame. This looks great and is an impressively solid kit.
