When Matchbox repackaged the Popy Dairugger DX as Deluxe Voltron I and later as Deluxe Vehicle Team Voltron, the packaging contained a description of each of the 15 vehicles. For example the head vehicle (#1) is called the Command Jet Explorer, and the lower torso vehicle (#11) is called the Armored Equipment Carrier.
I'm trying to determine the origin of these names. Are the Dairugger vehicles named anywhere? I don't own any Dairugger toys -- and I wish I did -- but I own two model kits of different scales, as well as a children's book, and from these references and the precious few photos that I've seen of the Popy packaging and instructions, I have seen no indication that the vehicles were referenced in any way except by number (1-15) and team (Kurugger, Kairugger, Rickrugger). Having said that, I'm by no means an expert in Dairugger collectibles.
Does anyone know? Thanks in advance!

I don't own the popy original but if you look at the Wikipedia article the vehicle names you mention are listed there as well. I am pretty sure, based on the lackluster names for each of the vehicles, that these terms were added by matchbox as a selling point.
They sound too American and too basic to have come from the people at popy. Even when translated loosely to English, the Japanese vehicle and weapon names are usually still pretty crazy/exciting and memorable (i.e. Volt lander (vehicle) and chodenji whip (weapon) for Voltes V). Most of us would remember the dairugger vehicles having another known name, whether cool or goofy.
You can also see that in the Dairugger XV show/article, each vehicle was referred to as a rugger (from the word rugby) and it takes 15 members to have a whole rugby team.
The only mention they make of the names other than air/sea/landteam is the specific team names in Japanese: Kurugger (Air), Kairugger (Sea), and Rikurugger (Land).
Hope this helps. Anyone else, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

One interpretation of the markings on the Popy Dairugger DX vehicles suggests that the vehicles are named...
Kurugger 1, Kurugger 2, Kurugger 3, Kurugger 4, Kurugger 5 (which combine to form Kurugger) Kairugger 6, Kairugger 7, Kairugger 8, Kairugger 9, Kairugger 10 (which combine to form Kairugger) Rickrugger 11, Rickrugger 12, Rickrugger 13, Rickrugger 14, Rickrugger 15 (which combine to form Rickrugger)
I rather like these names. They remind me of the Rebel Starfighter handles in Star Wars -- Red Five, etc.
The corresponding Voltron names for the vehicles would then be...
Air Team 1, Air Team 2, Air Team 3, Air Team 4, Air Team 5 (which combine to form the Strato Fighter) Sea Team 6, Sea Team 7, Sea Team 8, Sea Team 9, Sea Team 10 (which combine to form the Aqua Fighter) Land Team 11, Land Team 12, Land Team 13, Land Team 14, Land Team 15 (which combine to form the Turbo Terrain Fighter)
I like these designations much more than "Communications Module," "Advanced Recon Helicopter," etc.
