What is a nice high-end Godzilla to start with? I know the new movie is coming soon so I'm sure their will be a lot of interest and buzz around the property.
Are the monsterarts top of the line or what?

First of all, please make sure to not use the term "Zilla". That specifically refers to the American movie, and it does not sit well with most Godzilla enthusiasts. They might lynch you for even bringing it up. the wounds are still too fresh. LOL But seriously, that is a pretty broad question. One of the main issues is that Godzilla's appearance changed in almost every movie. So first you have to narrow down what style you are particularly interested in. Then there are other considerations - do you like realism? Do you want play value? What scale are you seeking? What price range? There are TONS of figures out there. Personally, I prefer the vintage style (i.e., Bullmark, Marusan) - whimsical, not too realistic. Some modern companies put out figures in similar style (M1Go), plus many were reissued by B-Club. But if you prefer realism, people seem to rave over the X-Plus line. This website is a great reference to help you along. Just check the companies on the left side and have fun searching. www.clubtokyo.org/listings/subCatListingRpt.php?catID=1&subCatID=12

Thanks. I grew up watching Godzilla on Saturday mornings in the 80's.. and that's what he was called so that's what I went with haha.
I guess something 80's retro but a high price range. I want it to be a nice piece. I think the X-Plus is something I'd enjoy for sure.

Blasphemer! May his foot mash your body to a pulp, your flesh burnt to a crisp with his radioactive breath and your bones ground to powder with his tail! Kidding aside the monsterarts look really good and I'm sure once the new godzilla is out they're gonna make a version of him too. There's also this huge vynil Godzilla made by Kaiyodo but's it priced at $1500. If I had the money I'd buy this huge 3 feet monstrosity in a heartbeat

I would go with the 1965 version of him. That is one of the most popular iterations of Godzilla. I like 1965 and the 1975 versions. The 75 being my favorite as thats the Terror of Mechagodzilla version.
I think the x-plus pieces might spike in price when the godzilla movie comes out. What are other people's thoughts?

Idk. They are already hard to come by in the states, but yeah prices could rise even higher on ebay and such. I think their are some re-issues coming at the end of this month.
I love the look of the X-plus, but I'm worried at the lack of articulation that I'll be unhappy with it. People seem to love them but I seem to expect more. Is it that hard to articulate vinyl? haha
I want an 84. That's my favorite.

Here's a link for more on that new gigantic series Godzilla
I don't really like it that much because it's not representative of the look of Godzilla in the movies.
Why is the 84 your favorite Gakken?

Just what I remember as a kid. and I love Art Adams artwork on the comics. I think it's just a perfect mix of old godzilla with a bit of modern flare... and the 80's! haha. I can't decide on the 84 or the 89. Subscribed

Depends on how much you want to spend and if you want to get other Kaiju in the line. Monsterarts is a good place but you also have some nice non-posable vinyls all the way to giant statues.

I've been looking to buy the 23cm-26cm Megalon and Gigan X-Plus vinyls if anyone has them and wants to sell.

You gotta start with a Shogun Warriors Godzilla and then the little diecast Bullmark Gojira, the one with missiles, plane, and tank on the inside of the body. You can't go wrong with those 2 pieces.

I am also late to the X-Plus game, but fortunate enough to get myself a Gamera 1999 Shonen Ric Exclusive before everything is sold out without mark-up. Found one of the last GMK Godzilla 30cm (Diamond re-issue) I can find online recently, and these things sure disappear real fast. So don't wait too long if you are interesting in something that is still available at decent price or on preorder. Prices literally double or triple just months after release....kind of crazy.
With what I see from my Gamera 1999 and research, X-Plus 30cm figures sure looks really nice. The sculpt is usually very accurate. Details varies from the source material (older suits has less detail, but are still faithfully recreated to be less detail LOL). Paint job in general is excellent, but do be prepared some hiccups from time to time. Like on my Gamera, there are a few paint flaws. But you can tell there are layers of airbrush over each other to get whatever nice feathering effect on areas that do need the attention (claws, teeth, mouth...etc.) On the kaiju body, the vinyl is mostly a flat color. But all in all, its hard to find another mass produced kaiju figure that can beat the level of details find in the X-Plus 30cm line in general, aside some one-offs resin or vinyl kits.
I also picked up a couple S.H.Monserarts. They are pretty good to mess around, but the articulation is very limited on some, almost to a point it doesn't justify the cuts and gaps it has, when many of the joints can only move a good 5-10 degree rotation. Other times, like the Biollante, the tentacles are super articulated, but you have to take care of bending and twisting it without making the ball joints pop out too often. Paint job however is miles away from X-Plus, often looking sloppy and kind of rough for a figure that cost $50 and up. Its a very good line for articulated kaijus, but part of me feels that I often have to pay more than what I get, in terms of quality.
On a side note, for people that are fond of dinosaur figures, I recently collected quite a few of these Papo dino figures that are so well sculpted and painted, with details far surpasses even the X-Plus big vinyls, yet they are only $10-30 a pop! Sometimes makes me wonder how much more detail X-Plus and S.H.Monsterarts could have gone, if they really tried.
