Anyone know about how much it would cost to get a custom head made from 3d pictures?

I guess it would be between 50$ and 200$ depending on the printer quality you're going to use.

That sounds like a cool idea. I would love to see the results.

Maybe made a head X2, X4... for some fans, can be more interesting, because the 3D work is maybe the most expansive part?

I'm not sure I got the question right. You want to know how much it will cost to print it or you want to know how much it will cost to 3D model it to print it after?
The price I gave you was just for the 3D print assuming that you already have the model. Now if you need to have it modeled by somebody else, that's another question.

Either way, it's a good question. I often look at the jumbos on my shelf, then I look at my bucket of Crayola modeling clay... and I get the tempting urge to try my hand at sculpting a jumbo machinder head from scratch, using the head on my Gaiking jumbo as a reference. zozo-mag

I have about 50 pictures of a super robot that has never been made except for 1 custom that I've see. About 25-30 of these pictures are 3d images of his head. I've been gathering as many as I can, different ones, just for this project. I want to get someone to print the head so that I can turn it into a custom jumbo.

That sounds like a cool idea. I would love to see the results. I've been looking for a large scale version of this robot for over a year. I've seen statues, but never a "toy". I'd settle for a vinyl if I could find one!! If I can find someone to do this head, and if the rest works out the way I have planned..... I'm pumped!!

ok, so if you only have pictures of the model, then either you find a sculptor to make it in real for you, either you find a 3D modeler to make and then 3D print it. I know that it's pretty common on the 3D printing company website to have messages from people looking for some 3D modeler. I know I've see this several times on the Shapeways website. I haven't try it myself so not sure if the people offering their service are good but you can easily judge by asking some of their previous work.

Well, I guess I'll be looking for a sculpter if I want to get the head done....

Why? Too costly? Just curious because I've been considering this also.

Id imagine the labor/time that would go into the preproduction end of it would be considerable. Might be easier for a small run just to sculpt and make resin casts of the head.

Exactly, cost. By the time I paid someone to go off of all the pictures I have to create the files needed, and then have it printed... There is a lot more involved in it then I originally thought, even for a fairly simple head. Considerably cheaper just to have it sculpted and cast.

Hoping to get my 3d printer this year Tom. You just need the original head to scan to make an stl file that the 3d printer will use. The only cons I see is that even at high resolution printing, you will still feel the lines from the print steps. Ive heard that these can be smoothed out with an acetone bath, but its kinda toxic. And it wont be a vinyl head, it will be abs or pla.

I wish I had the original head Derik. Unfortunately, all I have are 3d pictures and 1 picture of a custom jumbo that someone had made.

Go on the forums at Macrossworld.com and PM a guy named EXO. He 3d models fairly complex tiny Mospeada figures to print on Shapeways. Compared to a jumbo head, those figures are complex with tight tolerances. So he may be able to give you a decent rate to do a simple by comparison jumbo head and he obviously knows about the Shapeways requirements.
Who is the robot, by the way?

I think he'll go great with my Mazinga/Mazinger Z jumbo collection!
