I've seen that one before, a long time ago. It's got to be an early Tawain set, something similar to the Godsphinx and also the "GoNaikin" Godsigma since they were ballsy enough to nearly rip off all the box art and overlay style.
One of the big tells in my opinion is that the black lion has WHITE wing joints instead of the usual grey on the KO.
Also, if you look at the green lion it's not as much of a crap green color on the body as the Taiwan ones usually are and the green head is a little lighter than what you'd see on a Japan release as well.
I like that the foam is cut deep for some of the weapons instead of bubble trays and I like the crazy colors of the missiles and accessories in the pink etc. than the standard Taiwan KO red and yellow etc.
It's a shame the arm lions were put in their spot wrong and bulged the foam a little bit. It was very pristine for a KO.
Overall this one looks like the quality may have been higher than what was pumped out later on as they cut costs on the KO to save money.
I would have loved to see the markings on this piece as well (stickers and lion jaws, etc.).
Anyone want to guess if this came out before the Lionbot KOs in the popy style boxes, due to the fact that it appears to have better features?
I also don't see an instruction booklet but I do see a store price tag I can't make out on the top right corner of the box.

i have a lionbot with that same cello but regular lionbot box.
damn i missed that one
i would say after diamond belts due to the foam not having the cutouts for the bubble cards. i have a jaguar bot and a couple others that look just like those lions.

So I just dropped a huge chunk of money on what I was thought was and may be a mint Popy Golion with chrome joints etc. I noticed it had the grooved shoulders and tails like the one in this thread. Its funny that the pictures of the lions on the original popy box have these grooves and notches but it is very rare to find these lions with the notches..The box was in mint condition until it got shipped thats when I started to see things that didnt make sense. First off the silver label on the upper left corner of the box was gold. I thought that was a little odd so I opened the box and beautiful everything looked like it was made yesterday bu wait that lettering on the cello is supposed to be blue but its green. The lions numbers on the cello instead of being white were red, green, blue according to the lions. Lettering that was supposed to be white was pink. If this is a bootleg it was done as well as I have ever seen. Does anyone know anything about this and where the hell can i find a good free image host so I can post pics of this. The lions have the correct white and yellow plastic, the paint is dead on the black lions neck snaped though as soon as I tried to open the jaw to voltron an easy fix but very brittle plastic. This is identical to the loose golion in this thread so Im now not sure if this is a very early run or the rumored bootleg that was being made from the popy molds here is a link to the discussion. toyboxdx.com/phorum/read.php?1,168178,168179 I keep finding little difference here and there when I put one of my other popys side by side. Besides the grooves and the neck issue everything else looks perfect, the differences are all to the box art and cello and oh yes the styro tray..It doesnt recess. Under the missles and sword where it should be hollow it is not it is solid styrofoam minty white styrofoam. Had I known this was a knockoff made from the original popy molds and box tooling would I still habe bought it..HELL YES had I known it was a bootleg and rather hard to come by would I have paid more HELL YES. Im not mad at all I really like it and will be keeping it for my colection. It is just too cool to see this whether it is an original popy or an unauthorized re relese I dig it and its little diffeences. I still need to do a manual comparison. The maual however looks old not shiny like others have. Please someone chime in and tell me what I have

I'm stumped, as I've never ventured into the Popy stuff, especially of these classic Golion figures.
Sorry to hear about your Imageshack account. I've used that image host for several years, and my account got locked into a BS "trial" thing as well. So, now I'm using Photobucket, and Flickr. Although I like Photobucket much better because it lets me use direct links to my images from forum threads.
And I think I'll have to migrate all of my images from Imageshack pretty soon Before they somehow get deleted, since I don't plan on upgrading my user status there. I've lost all of my best pics when Multiply sold its domain; I don't wanna lose any more of my pics again, especially at Imageshack.

The chrome segments and sharp teeth are from early Popy Japan versions, pre Godaikin Golion most likely. there is a small chance you have a very early Godaikin Golion with a remainder Japanese early version toy packaged in the US.
Golion came out in 1981 and the early Godaikins were 82/83.
My particular Golion I own doesn't have the chromed mid segment on the arms; that was removed to save $$. Teeth were dulled for US safety standards.
E
P.S. From a stress engineering standpoint, the grooved tail would create a stress concentration. That would break too easily for a kid's toy, so I imagine that teeth and tail revisions would both be improvements.

So then if this new one I just bought is counterfeit then they own the first set of molds or this truly is a first run piece and the color differences may be the original artwork and the Styrofoam may have been hollowed out for weight and material savings
