Tnx guys. You also mentioned Ideon, and how the 3 individual vehicles undergo transformation to become head-n-arms, torso and legs of the giant robot. But those form are nothing more than body parts, it's not really an alternate mode. Nope. Each vehicle has an alternate mode.. not just becoming body parts for Ideon. space runaway Ideon was from 1980 anime and all three components have alt modes ! but none of the modes is a a robot mode yup. This is great! I was looking for those pictures. LoL Now for a toy though, I don't think we got the first combining toy of ideon (a toy where the vehicles had both alt modes) until recently, right?

Now for a toy though, I don't think we got the first combining toy of ideon (a toy where the vehicles had both alt modes) until recently, right? That's a good question actually. There's loads of vintage Ideon toys and I'm sure some of those are capable of combining, but IIRC the only transforming ones are heavily partsformer-y...if they transform at all. In fact, I think the only "transformation" they can do is removing parts from them so you can combine them in the first place, and any resemblance to the alt mode is merely coincidental - for example, at least on one toy, you can kind of turn Ideo-Buster into Sol Conver, but you're basically left with a truck with no cockpit and I'm not even sure if it has any wheels.

Cant tell,, never owned or even seen one. more likely the tech back then makes it too difficult or expensive to make.

I think SOC ideon or something like that is the first fully transforming toy version, so for a toy combiner he is too recent. The old super DX ideon combined but only did vehicle mode and no alt modes if I remember correctly.

Intersting discussion. Dang, I wish my memory, or search function would dig where I want, LOL, as this has been hashed over before. Can't find it. Proboably on TBDX, or somewhere else.
Original Getter Robo really doesn't count for what you are looking for, since the 3 ships can only combine into ONE of the Getters at a time. There are not 3 ships, which make 3 seperate robos, then combine into a final robo.
Anyway, if you don't care if the individual parts' alt modes are not robots, it opens a few possibilities, but the dates are pretty close, as you've discussed, not much dated before Construction Robo.
From Takara also, things like the 7-2-1 Combination set, have individual parts/robos, that can make a few different sub forms, before combining all into the big bot.
Dairugger is a kinda/sorta, as the 15 vehicle parts do technically have alt modes as the 3 team vehicles, of 5 pieces each, in Land, Sea, Air Teams, which act seperately in battle.
Ideon is a good one as Revolver and ChogokinAbdul said. The vintage combining Ideon toy does indeed have alt modes for the 3 vehicles. There is more cleverness, and a wee bit of origami that you don't expect from looking at pics of the blocky shapes, but they can form fully land based, or laughable flying forms (stubbiest.wings.ever.LOL) The SOC took the self contained origami to a whole other level of course, but the vintage gets it done.
The Xabungle DX vintage, again, did a simple change of the individual parts, between land based, or goofy flying mode machines, like reveolver post above of the SOC.
Acrobunch is not older,1982, but did have kinda hokey "flying" modes of the individual bikes, plus a big combined road vehicle thingamabob, before forming the DX robot.
