Newbee question: Besides the Waruder/bug pilots, there seems to be 3 or more different styles/sculpts of the tiny Diaclone pilots. Can anybody tell me roughly which styles came first, why the sculpt changes, etc.?
P.S. I really dig these little guys; besides looking cool individually, they anchor the feeling of 'epic' scale for the toys/robots.

Welcome to the BBS waruderos I've noticed that the bad guys like Waruderos have alien sculpts. The car driver diaclone pilots seem to always have head-gear/ a helmet. Then the Diaclone land sets/ normal robots seem to have normal-is human heads. ....those are just my casual observations. I bet someone else has a better list.... -E

Ahhhhhh, that's it. Exactly what I was asking about (great pic Mattz, thanks for posting this link). So those are the three different sculpts/forms that good-guy diaclone pilots come in, all with magnetic feet. The thinner fellow on the far right seems to be from older issued toys from what I gather in the short time, ?because I see him in most of the catalog pics, while the actual toy supplied contains the more robust looking 'middle' style of figure (center figure in the pic).

Yep.
Looks like the sculpts in those images run from newest to oldest. The skinny guys are definately the oldest. You'll find that some of the original toys, such as Cosmoroller, diatrain, and diabattles, include stations that will only fit these thinner drivers. I believe they were exclusively released in Japan between 1980 and 1981. I used to think they were prototypes that had never actually been released until I saw a Great Robot Base auction on yahoo japan a while back with thirteen of those guys. GRB only comes with five pilots, so the other 8 must have come from other Diaclone toys. I'm still not sure why Takara switched the driver molds mid-release though.
The second mold was commonly used as late as 1983, and was probably for non-car robots. The final sculpt was used with car robots. Both of the last two sets were also released along with the Gig, Ceji, Diakron, Kronoform, King Dam, and Fightbot incarnations of Diaclone.
Obviously, the insect sculpt (not pictured) was included with the Waruder toys (Waruderos and the insecticons).

Thanks for that last post Shaxper, that's the info I was really curious about. I had originally thought that those thinner mini-figs were prototypes from the catalogs too, now I know better. Thanks all. ( It's good to see you back Shaxper. )

INTERESTING!
See my Great Robot Base came with the 2nd release figures. At first I thought it was a switcharoo, but now your explaination makes sense. The GRB probably came with BOTH incarnations of the drivers. Mine happens to be the second.
