I saw this thing on YJ. "The Great Robot Base" is printed near the top on the front of the box. It looks EXTREMELY cool, but also expensive (over $1000 starting bid).
Can anyone tell me more about this? Thanks...

GRB is the greatest Diaclone toy ever made and surfaces on Yahoo Japan regularly, but $1000 is far too much. Never pay over $450 for one. You can get tons of info and pics from Ed here: www.robotjapan.com/diaclone_great_base.htm

It looks like the YJ bidders agree with Shaxper too, as this one has been sitting at this 'optomistic' opening bid for weeks. Man, it is a gorgeous item though!!!...but with service charges and shipping, are'nt we looking at closer to $1500 US? Ward

The funny thing about that opening bid is that for about 2 years some high-end collectors would have been happy. The GRB didn't surface in the US or e-bay that often and in MIB condition.
I guess my point is that I think it is almost WORTH 1K if it is PERFECT. Or think of it this way. Voltes V is worth about $750 these days and GRB is much rarer.
The handling charges though put it over the top....

Well, to be "perfect", it would have to be the original 1980 version with the stick figure drivers. I haven't seen the auction, so I don't know if it is or not.
I've seen 110% perfect ones on Yahoo Japan, absolutely complete with VG boxes and 13 stick figure drivers (GRB only came with five), and that still went for around $450 USD. Keep in mind too, as amazing as GRB is, he contains no Diecast. The only metal content he has is magnetic plates for drivers to attach to.

That's the one. It looks clean, with sharp packaging...beautiful I finally recieved an eBay GRB from a couple months back (the one with arm snapped off). The pictures looked bad, but not so bad as it was. It seems to have spent time in a washing machine (front loader), with nails and sandpaper thrown in . Really, it was good to see that this toy stood up to frequent play, and was miraculously complete (second series drivers). Some kid really loved this toy; because as 'played with' as it is, he kept it all together. The reputation of this toy was so built up for me... and figuring I'd never afford one of these, I had to try for this one; just to sip from the Grail. Alas, even beat up, it's the best toy I've got, makes me want a perfect one worse...and really has me thinking about the FortressX (which you fellas have described here, as an engineering marvel !) Yeah, I did the same thing. Back when GRB and FX were super rare, I found Fortress X for $450 or so on ebay and grabbed it. It was way over my spending limit, so when GRB rolled around soon after, I had to let it go. Instead, for only $40, I managed to pick up a beaten up GRB with no arms and no escalator. It was STILL amazing to have, and I still love the heck out of it. The command center alone is worth having!

LOL! Even armless, GRB rocks!
The command center is exceptional; a perfect combo of playset/diorama. GRB is so loaded with features, shiny eye-candy, & toy magic... it's one of the few toys that I can imagine actually capturing a lucky kids attention, for hours at a time.

That's what I admire so much about GRB and Fortress X. Those toys were designed to be a child's best friend and sole source of amusement. You really didn't need any other toys when you had one of those. I mean, heck, in 1980 he was the only Diaclone toy and the series STILL made it.
Above my limit too...luckily, Rinkya takes credit cards Just hoping nobody bids the minimum $1K US on the current YJ auction. It would set a precident which excludes me from ever owning a minty GRB Ward
No, I'll have to save up for that higher level stuff...for years Shaxper's advice comforts me regarding: 'there is no such thing as rare Diaclone on YJ'. Seems to be true since I've seen just about everything on there in the first week of looking Both of the recent 'Fortress X's on eBay, & YJ sold, & the beautiful GRB on YJ has been relisted at the same opening bid. I did some smaller YJ purchases through Rinkya recently, to see how smoothly it goes. How's your toy hunting going Frog? Was that you who landed a Fortress X? Ward
