Hi,
I am new here, and I need some help about Jaguarbot.
I knew that Jaguarbot was a version that made in Taiwan in the 80's, just like Golions and Lionbot. However, I barely see Jaguarbot in Taiwan, compared to other versions.
How is the quality of Jaguarbot? Also, I am wondering if there is any labels on the back of black lion, or under the jaws of the other 4 lions.
Any help on these questions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

If you give it some time the guy from the Voltron thread should reply, or you could pm him. He is ill, and it takes him long to respond. Currently he is the only one I know of with this variant.
It may just be hard to find because it was quickly changed during production years ago. In the last few years, a few rare box variants of all the Taiwan DX KO sets have turned up, just one, sometimes two of each.
I want to believe they are all box variants made for different countries/export, that's why there are so many different ones.

I went through some old threads, and saw a few vintage KO sets, like Lionbot (rainbow wording), 5 in 1, Jaguarbot, Golion, etc. It really makes me jealous I had a set of Taiwan-made Voltron in the 80's, when my grandma bought them in separate boxes. I don't remember if it is "Golon" or "Chogokin" version (probably not "Lionbot" version, since it's made in plastic), but I would be very happy to find either one. Anyways, I will wait for a while before pm Crpdiablos, due to his health condition. Thanks for your advice again.

The ones in separate boxes from Taiwan should all be in black cardboard window boxes and read lionbot. At least, the diecast ones are.

Really, the lions are plastic?
I will correct my above post, your pictures helped. I was thinking of the black boxes that just say "lion" (though I have seen number 4 before).
Also, I do see the silver boxes (#3) every now and then. I don't feel it is that hard to find. #1 box I don't see as much, I see the "lion" boxes more.

I saw the lionbot version (#4 in my post) on eBay 4 or 5 times in the past, but whenever I asked the seller about the material, all the answers were "plastic". I wonder if they ever made the metallic ones like the other versions and the complete gift set are. If it only says "Lion", it's probably the "Chogokin" version. As a Taiwanese collector wrote in his blog, this version has the v-belt & sharp teeth features. Also, the blue and yellow lions have the "neck". Since I can't upload/pictures in the thread (Does anyone know why? Is there any secret tip to do so?), I will provide the link below: blog.xuite.net/yapyted/twblog/107518643-%E9%97%9C%E6%96%BC%E8%81%96%E6%88%B0%E5%A3%AB%E5%8F%B0%E7%89%88DX%E8%B6%85%E5%90%88%E9%87%91That's interesting, the silver box version on eBay is the only one I have ever seen. It looks so legit as it has Japanese words on the box, as well as the unique back. I would really like to own one, if the price is reasonable.

I honestly think the seller is mistaken. I have a foot lion from a Chinese or Korean bootleg (the lion is red though) that is plastic - but it does not come from a Voltron/go lion toy.
I am almost positive that every box variant you listed is diecast body, even on the KO. The heads, legs, tails and other parts are most likely definitely plastic but I can't see this size not being diecast.
The Taiwanese sword and shield set on the backer card is awesome - I've never seen that. It's almost like the matchbox sword and shield set offered later.
There were some other plastic KO go lion/Voltron, but as I said, not DX size.

The fourth version should be diecast. I am almost 100% positive on that.
On the ones you linked to above, it's just variance in pricing by the sellers.
The Italian seller is way overpriced on those Taiwan versions. You'd pay that much for the French box of the individual popy golions.
For the 2 U.S. Sellers, the $25 one priced them too cheap, the other store in Indiana is right at the high end of market price for these ($40-50). And usually that store is more expensive for less complete items.

If it is diecast, $25 would a great deal. However, it seems to me that those are not the KO from old days, at least not the green lion. The vintage green lion, even if it is KO, has the red border surrounding the "No.3" rectangle, like what the Italian seller is listing.
For the red lion, I am still learning how to distinguish the new ones and old ones. Is there any difference on quality and appearance?
By the way, that US seller also sold a separate box of black lion, which I barely see on eBay: www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-LIONBOT-No-1-BLACK-LION-ITS-WEAPONS-/201379928497?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=ybRnejbtqoPOIkSJANF8aaPvbGM%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
The black lion has the white hinges on the wing, but it has the "yellow rings" on the portions where the red & green lions connect to in combined form. Unless it has the "emerald green" on the forehead (which couldn't tell from the picture), it is probably not the vintage KO, in my opinion.

Actually, other than the number sticker, I think the vintage green lion KO looked nearly identical. Later on however, they started to use that terrible color green paint instead of the metallic green.
The red is pretty much identical except for the number sticker as well and the stripe stickers on top of the back half may be a little different. I may have a vintage KO red lion laying around. I will check.
I don't see the black lion separate box often either. I always thought that the yellow ring black lion (and yellow necks on the other lions) were a vintage KO though - the ones I have seen as full sets with those features were old. Sometimes I have seen those that look closer to actual golions, but the yellow parts kill it for me. It looks too crappy.
I have a friend who knows the old and new (current) lionbots pretty well. I mainly know just the older ones. He is a member here also, but doesn't post all the time. I'll get in touch with him.

Besides the ones that have the "1981 Taiwan" words under the jaw, I really can't tell a difference between vintage KO and the recently-made bootleg red lions. Wow, I think you made a very good point, as the new-made bootleg black lion doesn't have those yellow rings! This is such a valuable lesson to me, thanks. By the way, I just checked the following website (I saw the English format before, but can't find it now): www.dxtoy.com.tw/http/lion.htmlIt talks about the yellow ring black lion on the 8th set from the top. It says "this is an unique version, because the black lion has yellow rings, as well as the BLACK, RED, GREEN lions are made in plastic". If the statement is true, it might be the reason why that US seller were willing to sell the 2 items at relatively low prices. For the yellow neck red & green lions, it gets more complicate. As it might be the old KO (Lions 5 in 1, V-belt): robotjapan.proboards.com/thread/18670/voltron-iii-golion-lionbot-checking?page=1&scrollTo=231504Or, it can be the China-made bootleg (also V-belt) I recently talked about: robotjapan.proboards.com/thread/23186/golion-voltron-chinese-koSince they were both made by the same manufacturer, I would assume that the yellow neck red & green lions can be only found in V-belt set.

I just wanted to jump in to help too. So the original first Voltron/Golion is the Japanese black box Popy Golion. this box has all Japanese wording but the box looks similar to the Lionbot box. Next comes the Lionbot. the first oldest versions have the typical Lionbot box, but the box has a huge Lionbot title on one side, and not across the legs but next to them in rainbow colors is the "Lets go lion!" text. DUring this period/early 80s, you also see the box variant of the Lionbot Golion and Jaguar boxes. later as in the late 80s into today, you see the typical Taiwan Lionbot box. Before we see the Voltron III also lion Voltron, came the Godaikin Golion. Once matchbox acquired Voltrons's rights the Golion was discontinued for Voltron III. Then there is the Korean Kangnam or King Lion. Last is the Trendmasters Voltron released in the late 90s.
now on materials used for conconstructional of these listed is diecast and plastic. On most the main body is diecast and limbs and head are a mix of diecast and plastic. The only mostly plastic version is the Kangnam. the Kangnam used more plastic then diecast its construction. So if you find an all or mostly plastic Vintage looking Voltron/Golion/Lionbot, then its the Korean version. Trendmasters did make a vintage looking plastic one during its 3rd Dimension phase/line, but this version is smaller than the diecast versions.
I hope this helps some.

For the oldest Lionbot version with rainbow-color text, are you talking about the one in the following post?
robotjapan.proboards.com/thread/21653/tell-various-lionbots-apart?page=1&scrollTo=303005
By the way, excpet the legits ones with the foil stickers (Popy, Godaikin, Matchbox), is there any pattern of embossed words to differentiate the KO's?
For example:
The ones have "Bandai 1981 Taiwan" under the jaw, are they belong to rainbow-color text Lionbot? or Golion? or Jaguarbot?
The ones have "1981 Taiwan" only (no Bandai) under the jaw, are they belong to rainbow-color text Lionbot? or Golion? or Jaguarbot?
Regard to the materials, I have to apologize that I didn't make it clearly.
When I said "plastic", I meant the main body. I really want to know if the Lionbot version on eBay has the plastic-made main bodies. I will see if I can get one at a better price in the future.

Yes in that post it shows the rainbow logo. Those are the old and original lionbots. They only differ from a Godaikin/Popy Golion in the following way: no foil decals, some cheaper paint applications, and may have a V, diamond, or other variant sign in the belt along with the usual star. Some Taiwan Lionbots have the made in Taiwan under the jaw, some don't. Even some Matchbox Voltrons have made in Taiwan on the jaw. Why, its because all Lionbots and Voltrons were made in the same toy plant in Taiwan. Only the Original Popy Golion and Godaikin Golion were made in Japan.
The current Lionbots you see on eBay is still mostly diecast on the body of the limb lions. The black lion unfortunately is more plastic than diecast. paint applications are cheaply done sometimes, and chrome can be at times a painted chrome, not dipped chrome. It just depends sometimes. Also the legs on the black lion can be painted chrome or decal chrome. May sound kinda bad or iffy, but the Lionbots are still way better quality than the late 90s Trendmaster Voltrons. That Trendmaster Voltrons is horrible. The box and weapon set for the Trendmasters Voltrons is nice but the Voltron itself is bad. Bad paint, bad off color, and bad limb connection issues. It is just a sloppy remake. Collection DX has a great review on the horrible Trendmaster diecast Voltron.

My friend drops some more knowledge. Sorry I didn't get a chance to message you bro, but you found the thread anyway. Too many variants in the Voltron game but it makes for fun analysis trying to keep up with them all. The all plastic one is Korean like he said. I didn't mention it previously because I thought you were only looking at Taiwanese KOs.

To xtrlowz75,
To be honest, even I am from Taiwan, I've never seen that rainbow-text version before, not until I found this forum a few weeks back.
I always want to get a Taiwanese KO DX set, not only due to the financial issue, but most importantly, to commemorate my childhood memory and the local hisotry. However, a vintage Taiwanese KO isn't commenly seen, and sometimes the price is over my budget when it shows up. Moreover, I heard that some people mix the old and new ones (accidently or on purpose) to sell them as one set, so I haven't pull the trigger yet.
For now, I think that I have learn enough to distinguish the "vintage" KOs and the newly-made bootlegs (excpet the red lions), thanks to all the on-line information, including this forum here!
My next task is figure out the partten of the embossed words, and the followings are what I found on the internet:
1. The very first edition of the Taiwanese KO was actually authorized by Japan, as the quality and painting were very very good, and the back of black lion shows "Bandai 1981 Taiwan", while no words on the rest lions.
2. For the 2nd edition, the quality and painting were a bit worse, and shows "1981 Taiwan" under jaw for red, green, blue, and yellow lions.
3. After that, all the black lions have "MADE IN TAIWAN." on the back, except the ones from "Lions 5 in 1" versoin, which the words are "MADE IN TAIWAN ROC." instead.
Well, it's porbably not imporant at all, just my personal interests, haha.
To Mr. Ginrai,
No problem, I like to dig out things from this forum, so much to learn!
There are too many variants to analyse, but it's the fun part, just like what you said.
Right, I am only looking at the Taiwanese KOs. I heard about the Korean plastic version, but I am still curious whether the Taiwanese manufacturers made a similar plastic version. I should have placed a bid on that black lion from eBay...

Kit11670 sells from Taiwan on ebay. I've bought all my KOs from him. He has good prices and if you're there, contact him and pick one up. Like I said they are still worth it. I have one and its the one a transform and stuff. Though I mentioned a few issues with them earlier, they still have some quality too.

Hey Ginrai what's up bro. You should link crpd's forum and video on his collection of Lionbots. So buzz can see them. Then he can see all the different versions. Or let me see if I can post the link as I think his video is on Youtube.
