Here's the rough, translation from the original Diaclone catalog (dated 1980 Takara). This is the 'Diaclone Story' on pages 3 & 4 of the catalog, which is numbered parts 1 to 4, and the 'Waruder Story' numbered parts 1 & 2. My co-workers girlfriend, Keiko, (visiting from Japan) gratiously agreed to translate it. DIACLONE v.s. WARUDER ______________________________ PART 1 : The year is 198X (yes, 198X). The Earth is running out of energy. All countries seek a new form of energy. 'Freezon' is discovered, which produces more than 100 times the energy of atomic power. PART 2 : The United Earth is now comprised of 5 countries, which are highly computerized and connected together via computer. The master computer is in Japan, and its name is 'LandMaster'. Landmaster is the main computer, on which the earth depends. PART 3 : One day...LandMaster intercepts a distress message from deep space...'danger!...force trying to steal energy..." message is suddenly stopped. LandMaster announces to the young generation...to save the earth...the gathering of the Diaclone! Immediately make a robot(s) to fight...WARUDER!! PART 4: Waruder attack very hard. Cities of earth are destroyed. Waruders begin to terrorize/become terrorists...make secret bases on the earth. Diaclones must be activated/powered, so finally a second attack (counter attack) is started. LandMaster makes a lot of Robots, and fights Waruder. WARUDER STORY (on same pages, part 1 & 2) PART 1: The Waruder planet is far away in (deep) space. The Waruder planet has a very high (advanced) science (technology). But the energy requirements of this society have drained the planet, which will die in 10 years without an alternate source of energy. The Waruder Emperor sends out many scout ships into space to seek new energy. They find earth! PART 2: The Waruder Emperor has many officers. He chooses a special force called 'kwanchu gundam'; lead by the great general, named 'Ingam'. Ingam begins the main attack on earth, using many mobile bases. They fight! __________________________________________ So there it is. Not much to it, but good enough to explain the conflict motivations to us kids (as if we needed a reason to have robots battle . When two advanced civilizations meet...diplomacy & trade are boring...let's fight! ;D

VERY interesting! Thanks Actually, not that different from what I'd imagined, though I'm sort of surprised they tell the Waruder side of the story, since they're sort of the scary unknown enemy. Then again, this was the first time Henshin Cyborg/Microman/Diaclone featured toys of the bad guys, so maybe they felt they needed to make them more sympathetic.

One thing that was odd, ...no other references to Earth's new energy source: 'freezon' , were made. The cross section volcano picture with the tiny white 'star' inside, seemed to have nothing said about it...but I'm going to assume it is the 'freezone' a new resource simlar to 'energon'. Think that's right?

Depends on which style of acroyear your talkin about.
I don't know all the names but can think of 5 different versions {not repaints} right off the bat.

Well "Robotech" was the American retelling of "Macross", which first aired two years after Diaclone began Really though, the general idea of aliens attacking is nothing new. It's a standard idea that's been told since H.G. Welles. Diaclone and Macross just give the humans a bit more of a head start to prepare. Welcome aboard, by the way. I don't think I've seen you here before.

I don't know the Microman story, but from what I understand, Microman did not make toys of bad guys prior to the release of Waruderos. Since this thread is up again, I'm still confused about the timing/origin date of the Acroyears v.s. Waruder. US Micronauts had the 'evil Acroyear' in the 1970's, so I'm assuming they were already the bad guys for the original Microman line. Yet, Waruderos isn't out until 1980? Just still wondering if the Waruder bad guys pre-date Acroyears or the other way around (as it seems from my recall). And there was a possible relationship between the Acroyear/Waruder (one becoming the other?). Ward

Every action figure toyline needs a bad guy... even Strawberry Shortcake had the "Peculiar Purple Pieman of Porcupine Peak"!
I would assume that in the case of an evil Giant Acroyear, they were trying to get an enemy for the Heroic Micromen to fight!

I was told this from a pretty reliable source on the now defunct Diaclone Mailing List, though he may have been wrong, or I may have misunderstood him. He also told me the Waruda were the same enemies from either Microman or Hensin Cyborg (don't remember which), so he may have simply meant Diaclone was the first time that enemy got a toy? This is one area of Diaclone I'll readily admit I don't know much about.

Hello, new here, old to Microfandom. Waruder is originally the name of the bad guy in Henshin Cyborg, Takara's first SF action figure series, which Microman was derived from, dating from the late 60's/early 70's, if I recall. Microman started in 1974. There are a LOT of similarities between the Japanese Acroyears and the Decepticons, too. The name "Acroyear" is actually a play on words based on "Waruder" In 1980, they revived the Waruder name for the enemies in Diaclone as homage to the original parent series. I'll post some more Takara toyline evolution stuff later that I think you all will find interesting (if you haven't seen me post it elsewhere, that is!) --Microbry

Hey Ward, long time no see! I understand where the confusion about there being no pre-diaclone villian toys. Actually villian toys have been a staple since Henshin Cyborg. The reason for the confusion is that of all the toys that were made to Transformers from Takara, all of them were "good guys" in the original toylines except the Insecticons and the Dinobots, both Waruder enemy robots originally. So this could have created the impression that Diaclone was the only line WITH villian toys, ironically. I encourage anyone interested in Microman to join the Micropolis Emabassy Yahoo group, too! Anyway, I'll post some more stuff soon. I have a recent pair of posts that deal with this a lot more and I may add some more to that, too. I'm glad to see the Diaclone story posted here, I'm not as knowledgeable on its backstory, I'm afraid. I want to learn more, though!
