I saw an old thread (circa 2015) on this forum where someone was selling the "holy grail" (?) of Gundam sets. A "Theatre Version" of the DX large combination set. I'm curious if anyone knows what he was talking about. I can't find any info online and the ad on ebay he linked to is pulled. Is this the "box art" version or something else?

I think he was referring to the box art lid version. I had never heard it referred to like that, I typically call it the "art box" version.
I had two of those, both deadstock unused and sold them to friends (one member here and one on another known forum).
I honestly loved the toy but hated the gattai g-fighter/tank. It was a bit too bulky for my taste and causes damage to the paint and decals on the legs and I could never figure out how to do the mode where the head pops into the bubble canopy like a radar dish.
I'd definitely buy again because of the box art but I have been looking for the Japanese super combination set (has everything but the g-fighter/tank) at a reasonable price as I think that's a better set.

Thanks, yes the box art version seems pretty rare... I saw one sold on ebay last month it went for around $1400 I think. I agree with you about the Combination Set. I like the Clover DX Gundam (super combo set) and kept mine and sold my set with the G-Fighter (unfortunately not the art box version -- it lingered on ebay a long time).
My conclusion was the same... love the Gundam figure and accessories but didn't see the point displaying it on top of the G-Fighter. And you can't get his head in the bubble canopy without bending his poor antennae! But its still probably Clover's best set except for probably the Zanbot DX, which I don't have... and probably won't get anytime soon at the prices it's going for.
I recently got a good deal on nice (not mint but complete minus some missiles) Xabungle DX. I really like it, its probably my 2nd favorite Clover DX now after Gundam. I don't have a DX Trider, only the Bird Attack. What's your opinion on the DX Trider? Is it much bigger and better? Is it larger than Xabungle DX?

I haven't owned the DX xabungle or any versions of the trider but the xabungle is pretty large, if I remember correctly? If you like that, the DX Walker Galliar is supposed to be nice also.
I have seen all the triders in person except the largest super combination set) and they all tend to be smaller figures (around 6 to 8 inches max) and come with a varying amount of accessories like the Gundam. The trider figures were never really "large".

Hi, the Xabungle DX is not as large as I hoped, but its well made. Its about an inch taller than the Daitarn 3 DX, about 9 inches. The wings have interlocking gears so when you move one they both move. Probably the wings are my favorite part, lol. Sankan Oh has cool wings too so that must be one of my subconscious criteria... I love that design! If you get one be aware the arm joints are really susceptible to wear in the "raised forward" direction since it relies on friction grooves between two plastic plates that can get worn. The right arm on mine barely wants to stay up...

I have both this Gundam Combination set and the Zanbot 3 DX. They are both my childhood toys that thankfully survived my abuse. I just have them on display now and they are rarely touched since I'm worried that the age of the plastic would make them very brittle.........

I haven't owned the zanbot DX but I have owned the Gundam DX. You can absolutely be fine with the Gundam, it's very durable overall. The only thing I don't do is any of the combinations where the Gundam robot goes inside the vehicles because those modes rub on certain areas and cause paint and sticker wear. Anything else is fine.
