Hi, I've steered clear of Dairugger XV since I started collecting chogokin... partially because its a "hodge podge" design (can't get past the feet), partially because the DX version is all plastic, and partially because there is just a bewildering number of releases... I found this old forum thread and listing from JoshB of the different versions: The official popy / bandai releases of dairugger are as follows: GB-72 ST dairugger (non transforming) GB-73 DX Dairugger (transforming) DX Dairugger (plastic) (Transforming - this was supposed to be diecast, like the SG-01 Tetsujin, but after tetsujin Bandai realized that it would be too expensive.) Small train station toy Pura Dera Dairugger Mechagold Dairugger (3 versions) Mechaclear Dairugger Gashapon Dairugger Gurarmusu Secret Weapon (Big Bear) Dairugger XV Secret Weapon (Big Bear) Matchbox / US versions: ST Voltron 1 (same as GB-72, minus sword, missiles, and launching hands DX Voltron 1 (same as big plastic popy, minus swords, stickers and antennae) Voltron 1 Assembler (rubber) Voltron 1 Battle Riser Voltron 1 Programmable Bootleg: - Bootleg mechagold - Bootleg train station toys - Carnival Machinder (15" tall ) - Bootleg TRANSFORMING GB-72 - (thats right, the bootleggers took a non-transforming dairugger and made it transformable. i've only seen one, ever.) - Bootleg GB-73 - Bootleg DX plastic (many versions of this - also known as LSA combo) - mexican flourescent plastic bootleg. Here is the old thread: robotjapan.proboards.com/thread/11148?page=2#ixzz4fzfPc0jVI'll post my question in next comment to keep it neat.

So a couple questions to any Dairugger gurus out there:
1) Is the list above still accurate?
2) Is there a good website/page were we can see photos of the different versions? Ideally with some discussion of what to look for?
3) Popy's GB-72 Dairugger seems to be made in 2 different boxes... one is brown and kind of looks like a whiskey box. Are they the same (size) toy?
Thanks!

JoshB is very well versed in dairugger and raideen. To answer your questions:
1. Mostly. There may be a few more bootlegs/bootleg box variants that you could add if you're a hardcore collector. You could get into box variants on originals as well (DX set vs individual teams for both popy and matchbox) and you could also consider the miracle productions dairugger that has had three different versions due to quality control.
2. Dig through forums here or just run random searches on eBay for voltron, dairugger etc.
3. The popy silver box is the gb-72 Japanese version. The brown whiskey box is the gb-73 small combiner (doesn't fully disassemble, but comes apart.

Thanks! Dairugger XV / Vehicle Voltron is awesome. The design is marvelous. It's a must for any vintage collector. I have 2 Matchbox Combiners and an ST. I was lucky enough to find one of the DXs factory sealed in my local comic book shop for $200! Definitely my best score "in the wild". Do you plan to collect them all? Where do you think you'll start?

Hi Coletron, I honestly don't know if and when I will take the plunge and get Dairugger. I was bidding on Japanese ST version a couple of times but lost. I think I want that one some day.
But is that the same GB-73 as the one in the brown whiskey box?? The ST GB-73 with the Popy Art box seems smaller...
If I get the DX one I'll probably grab the US version since its much easier to find and cheaper. Then if I really love it then the hunt will be on for an upgrade to the Popy DX one day! lol

Japanese ST is not the same as the brown whiskey box version.
GB-72 is the whiskey box combiner, sometimes called mid size or DX as well. It doesn't fully separate. There is a vintage bootleg of this also but the poppy original is better quality.
GB-73 is the popy Japanese silver box ST with the sword and launching leg missiles and fists and removable chest plane. The American matchbox ST is the same as this except no firing fists or leg missiles.

Thanks Mr. Ginrai, does the GB-72 have any metal or is it also all plastic?

I never got to big into dairugger but do have the important ones and one good boot leg and one junk bootleg. My favorite is the mini transformable plastic one in a miniature dairugger xv box. It is very similar in design to the brown box but all plastic and each piece is one color, so I guess it may have been a mode. It has and what appears to be an unfinished toy but no painting instructions. Its very strange because of the nice box with Bandai on the box or is it popy on the box either way it is made by Bandai so ive always wondered why it is unfinished . Id like to have someone print it or have a machinist make some from aluminum. the design would have been great if it were diecast.

My friend in Taiwan owns a special bootleg that is bigger than GB-72, but smaller than the plastic DX version. He has 2 sets with different boxes, but the toys are the same. The materials are plastic and metal. It was made in Taiwan, but was rarely seen even in the 80's. Here is the link to his blog. The content is written in Chinese, but the photos should show the details. blog.xuite.net/yapyted/twblog/107518196

It looks like the first one he shows,on the left is the Taiwan gb-73 in a different box compared to the one we usually see in the US. The second one that he shows, on the right (and combines in the pictures) looks like a larger gb-73 that is modified and also has the addition of four additional "vehicles". See how the box says 15 in 1 but the overlay that matches the DX style says "19 in 1"? Or are both box versions that he shows "19 in 1" versions? I'm a little confused since he actually doesn't show the first one opened, if he means that's the gb-73 KO in there or another 19 in 1.

Really cool photo summary on your friend's blog, Buzzerbeater. It's astounding how many variants there are. Here are two of the three in my collection. They are probably the most common, but there's something to be said for a classic: The 15" Matchbox Combiner displays beautifully. I got this one factory sealed. I won the sword at auction on eBay. I probably paid too much for it, but it's nice and shiny. I think it's from Korean manufacturer DY Toys. If any of you know otherwise, please let me know. My Son also has one in very good condition that he plays with and displays in his room. I bought this for my Son's 8th birthday six weeks ago from TF Source for $130.00. It was factory sealed and had the nicest box I could find. At the time, there were four new ones on eBay as well. Now, there is just 1 loose one. It seems like these are getting kind of scarce. Because of Voltron's resurgence, I'm also noticing a lot more bidders on the combiners when they come to auction. So, I definitely recommend picking a Dairugger up; but you may want to consider it in the near future.

The very first picture shows 2 boxes, they are the "special bootlegs" I was talking about.
The 2nd picture is the Taiwan bootleg GB-73. The reason he shows that picture is that he thought the 2 special bootlegs he won from the auction are GB-73 KO's (the seller did not show what is inside when he listed them online).
Both sets are identical, even the inner covers are the same, both say 19 in 1. Only the outer boxes are designed differently.

Don't forget to pick up one of the cheap $25 China Dairuggers on eBay. They are molded from the transforming small GB-72, and are actually worthy to have in a collection. Very well made, nice chrome, and a nice chrome sword for a cheap price.

I have been collecting Dairugger bootlegs and variants for some time. I'm going to post a number of pictures and comparisons in this thread of some different variants and sizes I have from different countries.
That said, the ones that Buzzerbeater's friend has posted are even new to me. I wonder if they were limited to the eastern market distributions. Die Cast Metal is the same manufacturer that did the early Diamond Belt Lion Bot DX Golion bootleg releases as well as the famous Mid-size diecast LionBot. And you can see the same package design style in the Space Fighter logo. Very cool.
