I don't think I would use the term "good movie" to describe this film. Meh. Yeah, I think I could use meh.

I have never read the book nor even know about the book before this movie.
I saw the flick last night and I thought it was just ok. It didn't blow me away or anything. There were boring sections where I almost fell asleep LOL!
I can't wait for the day when we'd see our fave Super Robots in a big budget film like this.

I hated the book, but loved the movie.

I hated the book, but loved the movie. That’s a different spin you usually don’t hear too often. LOL I loved both.

The book oftentimes got caught up in itself. It felt like the writer just wanted to show the reader "look how much obscure pop culture crap I love". The lead character was a complete mary sue, and was almost unlikable. The movie stripped a lot of that away.

He was definitely unlikable in the book, but I absolutely loved the pop culture references. There was no way they could have included everything from the book. I loved the book, and I really liked the movie. I believe it could have been told better as a six episode Netflix series though.

Funny, this is an older thread but I thought I would chime in-- from a kid perspective, and I have three girls, the movie did a great job. I missed seeing the Minerva and was guessing that Star Wars licensing didn't happen, but they enjoyed the movie and keep re watching it. I'm interested in reading the book now!
