So I don't mean the reboots e.g. Soul of Chogokin or special editions (like GA-100 Gundam) etc but rather something from an anime or super sentai show that has the features we consider chogokin: robot, made with die-cast, shooting fists, missile launchers etc. Sometime in the 80's those got replaced with Zords or Transformers....
I'm maybe leaning toward saying Bandai's Maskman 5 DX... its a combiner with die-cast (circa 1987) but doesn't launch anything. Maybe the ST version does, I don't have it, and my DX example is a loose one that's missing the drill bits - but I don't believe they shoot (anyone looking to sell any Maskman 5 accessories plz let me know!).
So maybe its not a real chogokin after all... so maybe the title goes to Flashman DX? It at least shoots its fists and launches missiles...
Any other contenders/opinions?

Cool, so they have the springs inside the drill bits?
So what is your answer to my original question? Is Maskman 5 the last of its genre or is there another contender?
You are lucky to get a complete one! Prices on it are getting like Voltes and Combattra it seems! I'm not sure if its popularity is because of the power ranger crowd because when you compare the vehicles and robot to Combattra or Voltes it doesn't look as nice. I think its because of 3 things really: 1) use of a lot of stickers that degrade pretty fast instead of paint, 2) usage of too much white plastic compared to another color or chrome 3) the tracks/wheels on the land vehicles (torso and legs) seem really cheap - on mine the 4 leg wheel tracks flop around and won't stay open/extended/closed because a tiny tab broke off long ago...
On the plus side the perfect transformations are cool and I think to really appreciate the design it needs to be paired with its "mothership". Do you have that?

The springs are in the diecast thighs of the Masky Drill part, I believe. And I think you can say it's the last of its genre, sure. I've always wanted a Flashking DX though, and I do know that has diecast, but then again I can't be too sure since I don't have one.
As for the prices, I didn't know it was getting really expensive! I got mine for around 450 shipped. I think its popularity stems from asian fans because it was one of the more popular ones aired all over Asia, including here in the Philippines. I dare say it could be even as popular or even moreso than the original Power Rangers. But yeah, I agree with the flaws you found, the stickers are the worst part. Everything else is manageable for me though!
Sadly I don't have Turboranger, i.e. the mothership. Still looking for it but I'm not holding my breath, it's gonna be super expensive even if loose.

Hi, on my Maskman 5 there are no springs in the die-cast legs to shoot the drill bits... so the spring would need to be in the drill bit. Maybe check some day would be curious to know the answer. I recently saw this Maskman 5 go for a crazy price in Japan but I think it was an early version or special edition because the box is slightly different -actually its another country/language version!: page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e265171247About Flash King -- it has a good amount of diecast in the chest and the construction is really unique as arms and legs are connected by a metal rod and the torso slides over it in the DX version. It looks very cool together with its mothership. I have a hard time deciding which of these combining Super Sentai are my favorite, but I think its necessary to judge the combination with the mothership. If I think of the combo then I think Changeman DX & Change Shuttle are my favorite followed by Sun Vulcan and Vulcan Jaguar <- Vulcan Jaguar is crazy cool! I think Dynaman is maybe the best looking robot... and Bioman is very cool. Anyway its tough to decide on my favorite I like all of them when paired with the mothership.

Well I stand corrected! I always thought the springs were in the thighs and not in the drills! But there they are!
And yeah, the vehicles are really cool as well. Turboranger would be great to have, but it's not as important to me as the robot. Plus they take up so much space! I'll be okay with Biodragon for my Bioman for now, haha.

I'd consider the DX Lost Galaxy Gingaioh Megazord set , late 90s? , as a true chogokin, super heavy, lots of satisfying diecast, clicky joints, and still made in Japan. Also the Bull Taurus DX zord from the 90s, Cool gimmicks, real metal chains, chunks of diecast, etc.

I posted the links to youtube reviews above and I'm on the fence... they do have diecast and are big combining/transforming robots but but they DON'T shoot anything! Not even a fist... so not sure I can agree they meet my definition of a chogokin. (Note that I say my definition... that's what makes this a fun exercise). Anyone else want to chime in? p.s. Also, I don't know why but I never like to see this "light grey" plastic. It looks cheap and kinda ugly for some reason to me... you never see it on the earlier chogokin thank goodness. I'm sure its about cost cutting because chrome or even silver paint or plastic would look 10x better.

Thats the korean version based on the wordings. Never seen that before.

Apparently neither have the Japanese if they want to pay $6000 for it! Kinda nuts but OK....
