For me, Blitzway/5PRO Voltron, CCS Shin Getter, POSE+ Baxingar DX Set ...and I'm sure Metal Structure Sazabi (but I won't receive it until likely Feb 2023, US retail. The price though makes it an unfair comparison since it is 3x the Carbotix Voltron.) Most disappointing was SOC Getter D2 (came out in 12/2021 but outside Asia was in 2022.) A retool of an older figure, nothing exciting about it AT ALL. Best Sub-$100 figures, I agree with S_Gokin on Action Toys Tetsujin28 and I will also add NewAge Firefox (legends scale Jetfire.) Best value/price figure is Threezero MK44 Hulkbuster. That thing is worth its price in diecast.
How much did you order the Sazabi for?

Guessing he was one of the rucky ones who got it for the $2K MSRP...? <--- Jearous... You had your chance when you post about the $1999 from Image Anime. But honestly, that was my best chance as well with a window like an hour or two to actually buy one. All the other domestic listings were sold out while I wasn't looking. But I don't love it enough to pay more than the actual yen price, which was closer to US$1400.

Mmmh so many choices… I totally with GetterBoi, those can be definitely in the poll list : - Blitzway/5PRO Voltron - POSE+ Baxingar DX Set - CCS Toy Shin Getter - CCS Toy Lazengan Aside those licensed toys, many good 3rd party transformers came out with high end finish quality, design… - Fanstoys Soundwave (Fanstoys came with high end releases this year) - Fanstoys Cerebro (let’s hope for the Fortmax release) - XTB UltraMagnus (despite a complicated cab transformation, it’s a top shelver) - Deformation Space Seekers I won’t mention our releases but hey, get a look on IF-01A ERIS and our OX Protectobots This year so many « new brands » confirmed their skills or popped out with interesting releases. Pose+ is to me the top toy company in my list, racing along with 5Pro (a Boss Borot !!!). I have huge expectations on Sky X Studio with their Tekkaman Pegas and the incoming Mazinkaiser. CCS Toy showed us how good they are, maintaining the prices lower as they can for such high end gokins. Some 3p TF companies are moving to original IPs, like ToysEasy with their warships combiner. See also how Moshow is now working on Gundam-like models. Very interesting. Disappointment is the Soc line to me, some release were like downgraded and « downscaled » But hey, the last announcements and reveal will still make our collection shine… The Space Sheriff Gavan Dol Giran is my most wanted toy for now !

At the time, it was just a bit too steep...and still, even at $2000, I'd pause...Blah, it's okay. Hoping for a GFFMC or Metal Build.

Not sure if this should even considered as a TOTY nomination, but my experience with opening and handling Robot Damashii Aura Phantasm Skullma is VERY unique. Skullma is a very obscure entry among Aura Battler mechs. It was never made into an action figure before AFAIK. I don't even remember the origin of its sketch, as someone that calls himself a big fan of the Aura Phantasm artwork and designs. Preordered it as usual since I collect the Phantasm figure line, but handling it in person is completely different from what I expected. It is REALLY delicate. Joints that we may considered as fragile on figures or other Robot Damashii's, are still 2-3 times thicker than Skullma's. Those very fragile antennae on SHF Kamen Rider figures that breaks often? You find them plenty on Skullma's hands, as each finger is one of those (it got a pair of actual fragile antennae on the head of course). Thin spikes, long skinny toe nails, toothpick limbs....you get them all. I have never handled a figure needed this much care for a very very long time. And yet everything is very well balanced. Joints are all pretty tight, but not too tight to a point you may snap a limb. Big backpack causes no leaning issue and figure stands very well. The clear wings often were a pain point to put on (sockets too tight and risk breaking the wing with too much force), but not for Skullma. They go on fairly easy with a firm push, and stay on pretty tight. Amazing sculpt, details, and the little paint job it has is very clean and sharp. Even the handle portion of the Scythe is uniquely shaped so the antenna-fingered hands can actually grab it tight. In other words, as fragile as this figure is due to the original design, it is really well executed by Bandai, when there is so much room on the design that it can fail on. We may gripe often on Bandai's lack of effort in some of the gokin releases, but they still have some good folks helming other departments. This Skullma is the proof of that. TOTY this Skullma may not be (nor is it my favorite figure in my Fhantasm collection), but it is for sure my most interesting purchase in 2022.

Very nice review, and an interesting toy. I always had an interest in the Aura Battler designs but none of the current options interest me. I was very happy when they announced the Metal Build Sirbine.
