As the title more or less says, what SOC would be a good choice for someone who might want to buy on for the first time?

Get GX-07 (OAV version)
Very poseable than most SOCs out there and it's Mazinger Z, you won't go wrong there.
Else get Boss, chunk of metal wrap with fun, fun, fun!
;D

Those two are also the ones I would have suggested.

Sky Spy, my take on your dilema:
Get the most recent ones, that are cheaper, such as GX-18 Getter Dragon, GX 21/22 EVAs and GX-23 Zambot (also pick up Max factory GGGG, if you intend to expand a little). These models are currently at their best prices and the price of the older models shopuld not risemuch over time....tehy seem to already be at their maximum range.

Stay away!!!! Wut r u thinking man? You think you will only buy 1 or 2 then all of sudden you have 15.
nah just kids ;D ;D Go with the one you like best since any of them will set you back a huge chunk of cash. I agree with Otaru though. Maz OVA and Boss Borot are the best ones to start with. Best bang for the buck and are still relatively easy to find.
BTW welcome to the addiction.

For shelf display I'd recommend the Getters: Liger, Poseidon, and Dragun. For all around fun and messing around I'd recomend any of the Evangelions. Beware. Putting SOC's on your toy shelf is like putting oscars in your aquarium. They will ultimately claim all the space for themselves. AND YOU WON'T EVEN CARE! JWM

The first SOC I bought was the GX-17 EVA, mainly beacuse of the bargain price (around $38, if memory serves). I was instantly hooked. Next came GX-15, Dianan A, Dancouga, and most recently, Gaiking. Each has something unique to love. I've got my sights on Getter Dragon and the Mazingers now. If I could turn back time (how's that for a Cher impersonation! ), I'd start with the various Mazinger incarnations. They seem to be fairly difficult to find these days, particularly GX-01 and -02. To echo a sentiment posted earlier in the thread, you can't go wrong with Mazinger. Classic robo done right. BTW, if anyone can hook me up with an -01 and -02, please do so. You'll win a friend for life. ;D

to begin, the GX-10, bar none!! finding a GX-07 is marginally more difficult..and a GX-01 and 02..well, maybe the GX-01R and 02R are good subtitutions... ;D

i think the best deal right now is GX 05R($95). its pretty cheap and its a great display item. and next would be GX 03( $120) and after that GX 24($160). A re-release of Boss GX 10 and GX 14 is dur soon so get it while the price is still cheap.

You should ask yourself who is your favorite characture out of all the SOC's out now. If they haven't made it yet then I recommend GX-01R, GX-02R,GX-07, or GX-18. You pretty much can't beat the Mazingers for value and there are a tonne of Getter Dragon's out there at resonable prices. Start small and work your way up, you don't want to spend $200.00 U.S on a Dancouga and then find out you really don't like the line.....although I can't picture anyone not liking a SOC
