I have recently purchased a GX-05R. However, I am having a couple of issues with the set:
1. The "horns" that attach to all the Gaiking heads easily come off.
2. The "horns" will not stay on the dragon head.
3. Most importanly, I am having trouble assembling Gaiking. The body/head combination will not attach to the arm/back assembly.
Has anyone had this experience with this set? Any suggestions?

I had all of the same problems with my recently-purchased GX-05R. The little knub at the flat end of Daiku Maryu's horns is the problem. I'm sure they designed the horns that way so the knub would allow a stronger grip to the diecast head, but in practice it's more of a hinderance than help. I trimmed mine a bit with an x-acto knife, used a bit more pressure than normal when instering the horns, and they gripped fine.
Gaiking was a real problem for me until I realized that the piece that the head connects to cannot possibly clear the circular screw housing. Once you get your mind around that, the space between his chest and neck becomes easier to live with.
Truth be told, the horns on Gaiking's heads aren't all that loose on mine. A little pressure and they fit snugly.
Hope the above helped.

The horns on mine a little loose too, I figured out that the horns are suppose to go one way only and can't be swapped from left to right (Daiku maryu head). As for Gaiking, you just got to hold your breath and squeeze real tight for him to connect.

Hi Guys,
What are the differences between the GX05 and 05R?
I too am a new owner of SoC Daiku Maryu & Gaiking and have gotten over many of the frustrations w/ the toy.
The horns on mini-Gaiking are secure and I think they're glued on and can't wiggle (I won't even try). I'm not too pleased with the flimsy design of Gaiking but you need to push down on the skull chestplate and keep the lower jaw down, but flat to the back, to get a good secure fit.
Daiku Maryu's horns ARE loose and fall out at the slightest touch and I plan to paint them w/ clear nail polish on the edges to help secure them better. Daiku Maryu's jaw is also very loose and usually hangs open.
Careful with the red wings! It's made with very brittle plastic, the tip of mine was chipped as was one of the tiny chest cannons.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will try them to see what works. I hope to hear from more of you.
Cedar, the "R" in GX-05R, I believe is a revision in colors. This model is suppose to have colors that match Daiku-Maryu's colors more closely.
Thanks again!

Is it still something you would recommend in getting? Been thinking about this one for a long long time.

I'd definitely recommend the GX-05R. Call me crazy, but he's my fave SOC yet. I look at my SOC Dancouga and marvel. I look at my Gaiking and smile.

If you're a fan of Gaiking and Daikyu Maru, it's a no-brainer. If not, I'd recommend it if you've got extra dough, can get a good deal, and there are no other SoC to p/up.
The Gaiking figure is infuriatingly flimsy (just knock him over and he makes like Humpty Dumpty... I almost want to crazy glue him together) and small (under 3 inches). The Daikyu Maru toy is cool, but its red chest wing is extremely fragile and mine is already broken in two places. The way he opens up also feels flimsy and loose. Doesn't feel like quality. And though Daikyu Maru's feet are detented, they aren't strong enough to support his heavy die cast body except in certain poses.
Still, I never regret buying mine!

You are absolutely right about Maru's wings. VERY fragile. I take great pains to avoid touching them (and that's something you shouldn't have to do with a TOY, IMO). He's nestled in my display case at such an angle where nothing can come in contact with the wings, even if nudged or bumped.

The wings are the weakest link indeed.
Mine are battle damaged ( a dent on the left side - mdlle on the wing) but after 3 years that is the only flaw.
The GX-05 is an unique set (just like Boss and the upcoming tetsujin) and therefore belongs on every collection.
