I'm contemplating on purchasing a SOC GX-05R Daiku Maryu Gaiking. There's a shop here in Taipei selling a Hong Kong Edition of GX-05 for a little over US$100. The HK Edition of GX-05R has an extra black Gaiking.
My question for fellow SOC forum members is whether the extra black Gaiking contains diecast or is it just plastic? If it's the latter, then I'll just buy a regular version of the GX-05.
Thanks!

I think the tiny figure is also diecast. I myself am waiting on a gx-05r (the regular one) that I purchased on ebay from toysonline. There's about a $20 price difference. Since there is already a tiny Gaiking with the gx-05r I passed up on the HK version.

No the figure is a "Super Robot In Action" figure and is made out of plastic.

I have the both the GX-05 and the HK GX-05R, the R version to me is much better, but it is not GX-01 vs GX-01R better. The little Black and Gold Gaiking is pretty cool, just like the plastic Mazinger, but depends on how much more they are charging, it is worth like $20 at most I think.

I have a GX05R on the way. It arrives from Big Bad Toystore next Wednesday. I have heard good and bad about the Daikumaryu. Since everyone who has responded on this thread has one- What has your experience been? JWM

I finally got my gx-05r last week from toysonline in ebay (boy does he take forever to ship!) and overall I'm happy. Good diecast content on DaikuMaryu and of course the usual dissapointment with the tiny Gaiking figure but hey we have the gx-27 coming to solve that issue. It's a nice piece, it was the only thing missing in my soc collection to keep it complete (although I don't consider the Eva's as part of it even though its part of the line, have yet to grow on me, it'll take a while, a long while).

I think it's a great SOC. For the price, I found it more satisfying than most SOCs, but it helps that I like Daikuumaryuu more than Gaiking in the first place.

Thanks. Ronin777. Get you hands on an Eva, start posing it, and it will instantly become your favorite toy. JWM

I just got mine today. Thanks to Ed's write-up, and the feedback here, I pretty much knew what to expect as far as shortcomings. All the observations praise, and complaints were spot-on. Nonetheless I'm pleasantly surprized at the how good the GX05R is. But the Daikumaryu is my favorite robot design of all time anyway. The SOC is bigger and, in most ways better than its Popy ancestor. My one real gripe is the horns for the die-cast head. The peg at the base of the horn has a 'key' on it, but there is no corresponding slot on the socket fitting in the head. I couldn't get the horn on at all until I filed down the 'key' a little. Other than that, this guy rocks. JWM

Jwm: i also had to adjust the peg at the base of the horn too otherwise it wouldn´t get in and by forcing it lost a little bit of paint. And the daiku maryu on the lower half of the body around the hangar entrance for the ships and stuff the blue paint is badly applied. making the surface very rough! Damn! bad quality control!
