I got 3 SOC's (GX-25, GX-24 and GX-04X) and a Robosapien (the special edition chrome) for Christmas. At first I thought... Oh no, I will like my Robosapien more because it can move, interact, make sounds, is bigger, etc... Sure, I had a blast with it at first and focused less on my new SOC's (even the hard to find Drillspazer and Marinespazer). But eventually, I gravitated back to my SOC collection and spent less time with my Robosapien.
I guess this experience proves that it takes more than bells and whistles to compete with my childhood obsession--even though I didn't grow up with most of the SOC line. It is amazing how branding and loyalty plays such a big role in one's focus/interest. As of now, nothing seems to come between my die-cast love.
I now just have to figure out where to put my Robosapien. It is still under our Christmas tree (I know it's February). I am running out of room for my SOC's and the Robosapien is so big... and out of place.

It's all about the look. I was turned off from Robosapien the moment I saw him. I could see that the designers were going for the primate-look (considering his name and all). But it just seemed too goofy to fit into my bot collection. (Yes, goofier than even Doublas and Garada combined). I could appreciate what he represents as a technological acheivement, but quite frankly I just don't see it living with me in my apartment.... That and he didn't have a rocket punch.

Agreed, when we got them in at work everybody was betting on how quickly I'd be running to the counter to buy it (like every time a new TF wave came in) but the overall aestetics are just a turn off. I like my 'bots to look like they can kick some ass...Robosapien looks more like H.E.R.B.I.E. than Mazinger. So I'm passing....

To add:
It will take you a good 2 hours to try to get Robosapien out of that darn box. In any case, had Robosapien done many automated things (ala Aibo) then it would have been a steal @ $99, but unfortunately, and this is what turned me off to it, when you turn the darn thing off, it will lose everything it has "learned".

In defense of the Robosapien...
- Okay, for $99, the Robosapien can do so much more than any SOC. Face it, our beloved SOC's are static--they will never move by themselves beyond our imagination... I wanted an Aibo but for $2,000... I simply can not afford one now. Once again, $99 is a steal for the Robosapien (I have even seen some on sale for $79).
- I do appreciate the friendly look and feel of the Robosapien. For me, robots do not have to look violent or ready to kick-ass. Take Bossborot for instance...
However, in the end... I still prefer my SOC's. In fact, I just purchased a Venus A Mazinger Angel today. And in a couple of weeks, I am going to get a GX-26 and another Mazinger Angel for my birthday.

True - At only a hundred bucks, for what it is - a friggin huge toy 'bot with some pretty complicated electronics - yes, it is very affordable. Is it a "steal?" Well, again, value is in the eye of the beholder. Most of us on this board are into super-robots for the nostalgia. There's a warm fuzzy feeling when the latest news about a new Daigokin comes out, when you know a release date is coming up for a childhood obsession, when you finally open up a shipping box to find, say, a Grendizer. That feeling is something I can't put a price on. I tried to explain this to one of my co-workers who's a few years older than me (just missed the boat on Go Nagai 'bots, I guess). He just didn't get it. On the other hand, one of my other co-workers is only a few months older than me: he got it.... did he ever get it! I think he was more excited to see Grendizer in SoC form than I was....

benohki, I can't agree with you more about the warm/fuzzy feeling--the tingly sensation in priceless. And it's a bit more than that... Each time I am a stressed from work or life, I just look at my SOC collection and the pressure just instantly goes away. In a nutshell, I go back to my carefree childhood days when all I had to worry about was being able to watch my weekday 6 PM robot shows in Manila. Sigh...

Yup now you have to hunt around eBay for some privateers that sell DVD's and buy SOC's to feel that feeling again! ;D

Totally ;D I was starting to see my interest wane quite a bit, then I realized that I was concentrating pretty hard on Transformers and while cool...they just don't fill me with nostalgia as much as the classics. So now TF's is pretty much in the back seat with me concentrating on characters from the old Shoguns, Micronauts, and Ultraman...MUCH more satisfying!
