Do you guys know why a lot of the colors of the SOC's (Mazinger, Great Mazinger, Combattler V, Gaiking Dragon, Zambot 3, Getter Liger, Grendizer) are primarily red, blue and yellow? With black and silver of course... And to some degree, The Getter Robos, Gaiking and Mineva X do not stray from the mentioned color scheme as well. Just wondering...

My belief that this goes back to how printing coloured comics was done, somthing about how early printing equipment couldn't handle to many different shades or somthing. That's why alot of early Super Heroes were all used some combination of primary colours. I guess then, that those colour schemes became associated with heroic colours. Plus alot of the robots you mentioned were created by the same guy (Go Nagai) so he would have a certain theme to all of his creations. That's just my guess tho' :

I mean for main characters.. you don't want to be mixing colours all the time or else the colours will be off. You want a quick base colour easy to access.. (times are different with computers though)

Duh... I should have known all of these basic things... I only went to grad school for computer animation and took a lot of traditional animation courses when I was an undergrad.
I truly appreciate all of your insights.

To add:
Blue, Red, White and Yellow are the usual colors for another reason, these are the colors that appease to children. Since Anime was originally intended to catch the eye of a younger audience.
Remember the original Gundam design was Red and white. But producers made Tomino change the color scheme to Red, White, Blue and Yellow to attract children.
You will find that most robots from the 60's until now will have similar color schemes, especially for the main robot or the "good guy" or hero.

I also love the red, yellow, blue and white colorings of the robots because they are the colors of the Philippine flag.

Mazfan,
The Philippine flag was modelled after it's colonizer's flag...The US flag with the exception of the sun and the three yellow stars...I need to stop. Sorry, my undergrad was History and I took a little too many Asian History classes which dealt a lot with oppression by colonizers...

I've wondered about this topic before as well. Of course, all of the above mentioned explanations make perfect sense.
One thing's for sure. They all look darn good together standing side by side on the shelf. ;D
