Ran into these at an import-store in Amsterdam, where I'm quickly becoming a regular. He had both the Missile and Bazooka version, and for a price I couldn't believe.. I mean, seriously, 15 euro a piece, for a large, posable, chogokin with plenty of zinc? Unheard of.
I picked both up on a whim, and seriously couldn't believe it when I took them out of the box. They surely aren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but the sheer amount of heft, flexibility and detail left me pretty baffled. Definately surpassed my expectations. And the extra little figures are a nice touch.
Anyone else love these things? And what was their original retail, anyway?

The Yamato Giant Robots really didn't do too well on the market. The prices dropped dramatically from when they were first released. I've seen them go on ebay for between $10 - $15 U.S. Dollars. There are a lot of Giant Robot fans out there that would have quickly snatched up a Diecast Version of the Live Action G. R., but for whatever reason Yamato decided to go with the Anime Version and their sales tanked. Let's see if Soft Garage does better when they release their Live Action version:

Yes, I also got one for about $20US off ebay just the bazooka version though.
I think this chogokin is very unappreciated, I'd put it up against my aoshima shin getter any day in terms of die-cast content and sculpting. I like the "modern but retro feel" in its design, articulation is great as well. Its a great "bang" for your buck.
I'm glad though that it is under appreciated otherwise we'd be looking more towards $100US than just $20

JB: Obviously they didn't.. the guy in the store explained that his supplier apparently had leftover stock he wanted to get rid of. Given that this figure was released in 2001 - I think - that pretty much spells out 'not a hot seller' right there.. I'm not particularly familiar with the Giant Robo anime, save for knowing it existed. So I don't know any better, and don't care which version it is. I simply like the aesthetics of the thing, and the fact that it's a honest-to-zinc Chogokin for a comparatively laughable price. LurkerX: Nice to hear I'm not the only one who benefitted and appreciated this great deal. It definately has an exceedingly high bang/buck ratio, which just makes it more enjoyable. please share the name of the store, and if there are any left, I'm always in for some fresh chogokin It was Space Oddity, on the Prinsengracht. He only had two in the store, which I both snatched up, but he might have had more in storage; I don't know. He only got them very recently, so either way he's likely to get more shipments of them.

I have both versions and as much as I LOVE my SOC's I have to say that the Giant Robo's are close to the top as being my favorites... As a matter of fact the only Chogokin I display or any robot for that matter is the missle version of the Yamato Giant Robo ;D

I have the Bazooka version and I love it. It is a really heavy piece of work and it looks great.
I have the anime on vhs and now they are being pressed to dvd so I am collecting those as well. I even bought the Special Edition "Eye of Volger" collector's box. I figure that it will look great having Giant Robo and the "Eye of Volger" on the same shelf as if they were in battle again.
Definitely unappreciated, but good for us.

They reason the price is so cheap is it was one of the first Japanese DX toys issued through diamond comics distributors. Retailers ordered too many, and consumers didnt fork over the extra money for the subtle differences to get a second version.
US retail was $40 i think... Its a wonderful toy.

A very dangerous gokin to tip over on glass shelves, and it's so heavy I had to get a friend to help lift so I wouldn't throw my back out.
The live action sculpt looks so good I want it and GR2 so bad.

I have the missile version and it is pretty handled more often then most of my SOCs.
I was only introduced to Giant Robo through Yamato's rendition.
I am so glad this toy went on sale on HLJ three years ago and I got it for about 20USD (incldg shippng) and I, too, felt the price was ridiculously low for something so superbly done.

I touch him alot too, Black Devilwing Shin Getter as well.
BUT, the most often fondled, and reposed is Mazinger 1901.
He just looks like he wants to tear all my other robots to pieces.

I have the missile version, yes it is very impressive as far as the zinc content is concerned but aside for that it really is not much more than that albeit the Ginrei figure was a pleasant surprise. ;D ;D ;D
