This thought just hit me. I was thinking about Mego, and how back in the 1970s, they obtained the rights to produce action figures for just about every movie and tv show out there. I started thinking about what would happen if someone did that now. Say one company was making 3.5 inch figures (instead of 12 inch) of roughly the same make-up, look, and feel for a whole bunch of different series along with playsets and vehicles.
Imagine. If this really took off, you could then start manufacturing regular people and buildings to interact with these characters. No toyline has EVER made normal people and buildings cuz you'd have to buy a bunch that worked with a specific toyline every time you got into a new toy series, but if you standardized it, you could use the same office building and workers for the Green Goblin to threaten the Daily Bugle, Superman to save Lois Lane from a helicoptor hanging from the roof, and the Ninja Turtles to save April O'Neil from Foot Soldiers.
It would never happen, but wouldn't it be cool!

That's a fun idea. You are right in that no one has came up with a line of characters to go next to "Joe Normal". Possibly Star Wars lines came the closest (with storm troopers and generic guards and Rebel troopers). Expanding the idea into inner-line sets sounds great. Now do you think that you would have troubles by not doing planned obsolescence?? You know, toy companies Want to make an old line go out of fashon. -e-

You know, on the one hand, each toy line wants to be newer and better than the last. But on the other hand, a standard size would make it easier for people to move into new toy lines. Since everything is on its own scale with its own look right now, you can't combine sets, so you have to buy at least four of a toy line to actually have fun with it. With a standardized scale and look, you could try one figure from a new set with some older toys, and if you like it, you may go back and buy more.
