On another BBS someone asked "Who Copied Who?"
One person argued that Transformers copied Gundam and then I've heard the opposite.

My Reply:
Gundam Versus Transformers--- who copied who.
Part II.
I would never consider one design to be a COPY of the other, but we need to consider Diaclone (Pre transformers) and Micronauts.
My guess is that Takara's earlier designs such as the Micronauts Jeeg and eariler Magnemo products influenced the Gundam toys. There were some other older obscure designs of cars that transformed into a robot chests above a car. Gundam, though appears to be a unique idea where it is "realistic".
Heck, if you go back in time, in 1977 or so we had Voltes V and Zanbot 3 that really got the "big realistic" robot toy craze going. Each of those, though, had 5 pilots. Gundam seems to be the next logical evolution where we get just one driver.
I would say Transformers were an evolution from early Micronauts toys. Gundam appears to be a seperate evolution (not a copy).
The TRUE copy/ inspiration/ grand-daddy of Gundam might even be Raideen. Transformers can trace back to him too.

Kido Senshi Gundam was first aired in 1979. The earliest Transformers show, Tatake! Chorobot Seimeitai Transformer (Combat! Super Live Robots Transformer) came on in 1986. JWM

Can that be right though? I believe the Transformers toys hit the US in 1984. They were in Japan before that. Then even before that were the Diaclone releases (around 1981).
Micronauts and other Takara "pre transformers " came from the middle and late 70s

I got my info from the book- Anime: A guide to Japanese Animation (1958-1988). My guess would be that perhaps the toys pre-dated the cartoon. JWM

Simply because TADAO NAGAHAMA creator of Voltes V (bless his soul...) co-created GUNDAM. Just my 2 cents
