I think we ar etrying to jam too much info in such a condense time for our new friend.
Dude the simple ugly version:
Macross (Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, aired in 1982 in Japan.) A movie was made in 1984, Called Summer of '84: Do You Remember Love?
1985, Carl Macek and Harmony Gold buys rights to air Macross in the US/North America. There are not enough episodes of Macross to cover a regular American season so they spliced and added Super Dimensional Calvary Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada and called it Robotech.
None Macrossworld differences of Macross (JPN) vs Macross Saga (US) - Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Claudia Grant, Roy Fokker and Max Sterling are Hikaru Ichijo, Misa Hayase, Claudia LaSalle, Roy Focker, and Max Jenius respectively. - Protoculture is as it suggests a culture that preceeded, not a plant of life or some kind of fuel. - Music is (subjective, well sort of, if you are tone deaf, then maybe you'd disagree) better in Japanese than what Harmony gold came up with as music. I can't belive Minmei won the contest singing those songs! "Life is only what we choose to make it. Let us take it. We must go on. We will win..."

Very cool, I think I'm on my way then. I'm happy to have a better understanding of this, and I really appreciate all of the help!!!!!! I think I will give the Protoculture box a try after all, and if, someday I find myself wanting to discover more I will get the pure 36. Looking forward to the adventure! Cheers Friends!

Totally true, the whole male versus female thing and the effect of Minmay's music was a little silly. That's why I prefer Robotech in that aspect, they played down some of sillier aspects of Macross and replaced it with a lack of consistency ;D. Either way I say watch both and just pick whichever you prefer, just don't turn into one of those uber geeks like at Macrossworld, they pick apart of every aspect of Macross all the way down what kind of urinal cakes were used on the SDF-1 . Chen, I have to disagree about the men and women thing. Robotech does mention that men Zentraedi and women "Zentraedi" are at war. The Macross version has the cool name for the broads; Meltlandi. And the effect of Minmei's songs are just as silly in Robotech as it is in Macross. True, what I meant is in the the later series like Southern Cross and New Generation the whole male/female thing is not an issue and music plays much less of a role, although we did get a man in drag singing Minmays songs which was a little creepy ;D.

I wouldn't call DYRL an alternate timeline more of a compressed version of the series, but yeah there are enough differences to make it more of a compendium than an actual part of the series. I've read that DYRL is the theatical experiences that take place durring the Series (Space War 1). It's kinda like Cameron's Titanic there are alot of historical facts in it but the love story and how the people lived on board were all sensationalized or made up for the sake of entertainment. DYRL is supposed to be movie that Hikaru, Misa, Max, Millia, Minmei, and Kaifun would probably go watch. Roy goes out like a champ but Kakizaki goes out like a Suka' again!

Well, originally DRYL was a stand-alone movie like other anime series with a movie-retelling. So yes, it was an alternate version of Space-War-1. However, it later go retconned into continuity: the movie is now a movie that was produced and shown WITHIN the Macross universe. This became the official explanation in Macross 7 when Basara and Mylene (Max and Millia's youngest daughter) get hired to remake DYRL - the episode even featured Mylene cosplaying as DYRL-version Minmay!

Now that's confusing, they should have left well enough alone.
