Rumor has it that Aoshima is porting over Toynami's MPC Alphas... They have been known to import toys from foreign toy companies for the Japanese market.

Why do they look so creepingly like Toynami's..... .. though I don't see anything that says "Toynami" on that add, but still...

Yeah, these are the Toynami Alphas. The hands, legs and the chest piece are some of the features that give it away. Though I don't know if Aoshima is going to have better QC on these.

The ToyboxDX news rumble just posted an article that reports on the Yacolog blog. They're saying that Aoshima will be importing the Toynami MPC to Japan, then tweaking it with new accessories and stuff and then rebranding it as Legios mecha! Hmm...
That's odd that Toynami would allow that sort of thing. They must be dumber than I thought. the MPC is clearly priced at a target demographic of the hi-end toy collecting adult. But surely they must realize that the hi-end toy collecting adult is knowledgeable enough to hunt down a Japanese edition of any given toy. Why the hell would they all a licensor to make an improved version of their own product?!

They must be dumber than I thought. they're just getting rid of dead stock, Aoshima is probably just re-boxing unsold Alphas. i don't know about your areas, but i only really saw Vol.1 at retail, and Vol.2 and after of the Alphas weren't around very much- most retailers remembered the valkyries were shelf-hangers and went to clearance most places, even ending up at wal-mart for a time. just as there are many Macross fans who won't buy Robotech-branded product, i'm sure there are a number of japanese fans who want the alpha but only if it's branded Mospeada. i was hoping for something all new so i'm going to cancel my predorders now!

Why the hell would they all a licensor to make an improved version of their own product?! We actually don't know how much improvement aoshima is going to make. They could simply buy all of toynami's remaining alpha and re-boxing them. Its a pretty smart move on toynami's part as they're "dumping" stock they can't get rid of. Of course aoshima should be concern with they're reputation is selling this but what with the recent QC problems on the getter releases they do not seem to care much about it. The kicker is that some joe blow toy gourmet collector is going to indiscriminately purchase this just because its marketed in a Jp box for 3x the cost of the regular toynami MPC alpha thinking [as always] that the Jp version is superior over the same toy marketed for North America.

But the article mentions that Aoshima will actually be adjusting the joints and everything... and then perhaps releasing more repaints etc... I'm rather curious what they have up their sleeves...

It could be a joint venture, Aoshima buying the dead stock or even the molds (considering their planning on releaseing re-paints) and then helping Toynami with it's engineering to improve it's quality (Aoshima is a world class maker of diecast cars and motorcycles).
This could lead to a Beta fighter if Toynami see's enough of a return or split costs with Aoshima and it's a quick way for Toynami/Aoshima too counter the Mospeada figures from CM Corp.

Wow, a Toynami/Aoshima alliance, aye? Whooodathunkit? It is kinda bittersweet though. After hearing so many stories of disappointment, I held off on getting the Alphas, even when they were discounted to $300 for the whole set at robotech.com. So I'm still unsure about whether or not I'll get any of these. The plus side is, maybe Aoshima will help with the production of the Beta, or Tread. Then, we will all still wait in anticipation to see what CM's is gonna do with it and how the quality will be.

is 1\48 the scale?

Well, the interesting thing is that the Toynami MPCs were 1/55 scale right? And these Aoshima renditions of the MPCs are 1/48...So wouldn't that imply all new molds and retooling?

The theory that's being suggested is that Toynami's Alpha's were never 1/55 scale in the first place, that they were actually 1/48 scale and based on the original 1/48 scale Imai Mospeada Legioss model kits. Supposedly Toynami labeled their Alpha's as 1/55 scale so that buyers of their 1/55 scale Macross Veritechs would be encouraged to add the Alpha's to their collections.
